Where the Crawdads
Netflix

Kind of a dystopia period piece chick flick with a subtle To Kill a Mockingbird vibe. The acting was decent enough. The plot layered enough and the cinematography was excellent. Makes me want to buy the book.

7/10

We started a series last night called The English. So far, Episode 1, it's really good!

Greatest Beer Run
I'd give it a 7/10
Didn't seem to drag on, never checked my watch to see how much time was left. A couple of times I thought it was wrapping and they had a pivot. Wasn't preachy but you could see the message. I think the plane ride at the beginning vs the plane ride at the end was moving.

Free on AppleTV, recommend the time investment.

Spirited
AppleTV
7/10

It's ok. Not hilarious, a little predictable. Entertaining and would watch again. Don't see it making it into the usual holiday rotation with Xmas Story, Elf, Xmas Vacation, Die hard, Home Alone.

Jurassic Word Dominion
Peacock
1
Just a bunch of poorly shot scenes thrown onto the screen.
Bad Cgi. Non existent narrative. Yet preachy. Utterly boring. Like the last Star Wars Movie, but less production value. Amateurish. That Megan Fox movie with the lions was actually better.

Beast

Idris Elba has to save his daughters from a killer lion. The motivations are there for each character. It is tense in spots. But the horrid Cgi just kills it. Kinda cliche and weak.

Thunderheart

Val Kilmer
Sam Shepard
Graham Greene
Fred Ward

Love it. Crazy goings on on "the res".

Nice little con / crime movie, twisty turny. Liam Hemsworth, Vince Vaughn, good character actors. Good tone.

I should rewatch it, I was a young teen when it came out and I liked it, but I bet I'd appreciate it more now. I know that back then I definitely didn't realize/appreciate how talented a cast that is.

And it’s a cool storyline.

Bullet Train
Netflix

So this started (and for a long time was) just a higher production Smokin Aces type movie. They tell you all you need to know in flashbacks and narration. Ugh.
But it was slick, it got better as it went along, and it came together at the end.

Aliens (1986). 8.5/10

Timeless classic. Did they really have to make Hudson such a fucking whiner though?

You're drinking the Haterade on this one. Bullet Train was great.

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
MAX
9/10

The Purge (2013), The Purge: Anarchy (2014), and The Forever Purge (2021) have been shown on the MAX cable channel the past few weeks. I found them addictive, not that I'm obsessed with mindless murder doses. But the theme interests me - the New Founding Fathers have taken over the US government and are decreeing 12 hours of suspended law annually where anyone can murder anyone of their choosing, in particular, the poor, minorities, etc., kinda like a Make America Great Again program to foster economic growth in a society free of homeless, sick and unproductive persons.

In The Purge: Anarchy, it's 2023 and three groups of people are left stranded in the streets on Purge Night, trying to survive the chaos and violence. Ultimately, they are rounded up by armed Purgers who take the group to a facility where they are paid to bring the people in as victims for an organized Purge. The five are brought before an audience of rich people that gleefully bid on killing them. As the killings proceed, an anti-purge group breaks in and attacks the Purgers, and the war proceeds.

Others in the series include The Purge: Election Year (2016) and The First Purge (2018). Hope to see them all.

Watched "Dominick and Eugene" last night, it's been a while since I have seen it but I loved it just as much. The best way to describe Tom Hulce is what I told my sister when we were talking about him.

"Just look at the roles. Nicky, Mozart in "Amadeus" and the asshole in 'Parenthood'. You couldn't find three characters that are more different and there is never a single moment in any of those movies where he falls out of character and I don't 'believe' him. Hell, he even nails it in 'Animal House' "

OK, let's hear the jokes about going "full retard"
