ACC on life support, 7 members getting ready to pull the plug

Nothing imminent (like in the next couple of days), but some other insiders say it'll start picking up over the weeks and into the summer. Notre Dame is also involved. Those 8 teams will split between SEC and BIG.

 
Negotiation 101.

Make noise about leaving, then settle with a greater share of revenues.

1. They aren't getting out of the GOR.
2. There is nowhere to land. Neither the SEC nor the B1G want to deal with this now. Especially since the only two that can even come remotely close to paying their own way are FSU and Clemson.
3. UVa, VaTech, NCSU and even Miami aren't able to provide enough juice for the squeeze.
 
its only a matter of time before the ACC dissolves, but tbh, this isn't really news. of course, the big guns of the league are unhappy. schools like South Carolina, Missouri, Northwestern and Minnesota are getting better payouts. and which dumb ass invited NC State and Virginia Tech? must have been an accident

The GOR doesn't mean shit if they have that many voting to kill the conference.GORs are essentially legal games of chicken. But once enough cross the line, they're about as strong as tissue paper
 
ACC used to be the best basketball in the country. With all due respect to that woodchuck at Clemson, the football has traditionally been weakassed suckage

No one’s really ever confirmed this that Ive seen but is 8 the number they’d need for the GoR to dissolve? I have no reason to suspect not but some other conferences I hear are a 75% of members needed to end it.

Ether way it’s very tough for me to see ESPN giving the SEC the ok to add ACC teams at the SEC rate when they are already paying them a much smaller rate in the ACC. But I do pray this happens so the B12 can get some teams closer to us that we Actually have history with. (Cuse, UL and sPitt)

I see you ignored the rest of my post.

Sure, if enough teams can leave, there is no more ACC and the GOR is irrelevent. At least that is what some people are saying. No one outside the ACC has seen the GOR, so we don't know for sure, but that makes sense.

GOR's aren't legal games of chicken, they are rock solid agreements that have been used in multiple industries for a long, long time ... 60_ years at least, probably longer.

If the only way to break them is to destroy the entity that basically owns them, those that are broken up have to have somewhere to go. Where do you suppose UVa, VaTech, NCSU are going to go? The SEC and B1G don't want them. Probably Miami, too. So, 4/7s of your group have no place to go. They won't ultimately go through with it, meaning that they are just negotiating. As I clearly said.
 
They've ALL met with lawyers by now, so this isn't exactly news. I suppose if enough left to form another conference, effectively disbanding the ACC then it could work. But that seems like grounds for another lawsuit unless there is a conference landing spot for the mentioned schools and they go straight there.

Which there isn't.

Every school wants an invite. Not all all are worthy.

Every ACC team will have a place to go, whether that be The SEC, B1G or the AAC they’ll land somewhere. I get your point but you are better off using teams like Boston college, Wake Forest and Syracuse. The B1G would take UVA, I would bet the SEC would take NCSt and VaTech. I know the SEC doesn’t really need to expand but they and ESPN won’t let the B1G/Fox take any ACC team they want.

They are not wanting to take Ore and UW, both of whom would bring way more than UVa.

I agree they play school, but not at the cost of millions per team.

Plus, they have been clear they don't want to kill the PAC, although they basically already did. Do they want to kill the ACC?

Right. Doesn't matter how much they meet with lawyers, if there is no place for 8-10 teams to land (whatever the number is) then it isn't going to happen and it's just noise.

But what if enough leave to form a new conference? Sounds like another lawsuit, but IS a way out of the mess. 8 team conference not bound to that ACC ESPN deal? Sounds fine to me, will watch anyway.

My point is that you have to have a large enough group to break up the ACC. None of them are going to break up the ACC knowing they are heading to a G5. That's the issue.

NCSU and VaTech are worthless. They don't come close to moving the needle. There are 3 teams the SEC might consider that might pay their own way ... Clemson, FSU and UNC. Maybe Miami. But, the SEC has its hands full integrating OU and TX right now. This stuff ain't easy ... and it takes time. If Notre Dame wanted in tomorrow, they'd make it work. Other than that, let the ACC work their own problems out.

It all depends on who holds the GOR rights, and what the effect of breaking up the ACC is. If X can basically make it a non-entity, and the ACC owns the GOR, then the group of X can get past the GOR. But as you and I point out, to get X schools to go along with it, you have to have a place to land. Not enough do, and you can be sure the SEC and the B1G aren't talking to them for fear or a law suit.

Well if 8’s the number they need 1 more. I agree 100% no one’s voting yes to disband to move to even the B12 let alone the G5. But it’s not unthinkable they may get to 8.

And we very much disagree on teams that are worth bringing in. Sure it’s about eyeballs but given Vat Tech and NCst decent history and in new states I think they are very good adds. Given the choice I don’t see UNC picking the SEC. Truthfully I can see the SEC adding:
FSU
Clemson
VaTech
NCSt

BIG adding:
UNC
UVA
Miami
Georgia Tech

Thats the only way this thing gets done early. Neither conference would take more then 4 ACC teams but each would have to take 4 if 8 disbands this. Only other thing is the B1G threatens to take 8.

Yeah only ND at this point would cause anyone to make a move. The rest are in it for a little longer.

Believe me, there's numerous posts per day on the GT board - little else to talk about in the off season - lately centering on FSU trying to achieve AAU status to become more attractive to B1G.
