Pray for Maine - 17 dead dozens injured mass shooter at large

I believe I read that he was institutionalized not too long ago for threatening to shoot up a National Guard base or something. If true, is there a way to confiscate his firearms and also make it illegal for him to purchase a new firearm? I know it's not failproof but is that a thing?

I had read that he was a weapons instructor and his family were all aficionados. Access to a gun was not the issue.

I will agree with you, only to a point. If the guns were heavily restricted and you wanted to lay waste to a school, you could easily do so with the right amount of explosives or with a suicide vest. These are mentally deranged people who never got the help they needed thanks to leaders who couldn't care less about who falls though the cracks, as long as they get elected. Get rid of the guns and you'll find that very little changes. In Switzerland, just about every young man has a gun and it was issued to them by the government. They are taught how to use it and how to act responsibly. With such a gun culture, you never hear of schools being shot up. Now why do you suppose that is.

I think it's pretty easy to be pro 2nd Amendment and at the same time be pro "lets try to not let murderous crazies be able to get guns."

But any step in that direction, and you're labeled a "gun grabber" by people who are unable to think.

The question still remains, "How do you identify murderous crazies before the fact?" short of some Minority Report type thing.

I could list some ideas, but all that will happen is I'll be called a "gun grabber" or people will say "that won't work."

It's not worth going in circles, again. I'm resigned to the fact that the US just doesn't care.

Reeducation training. If we were all in a giant padded prison playpen, then we couldn't hurt ourselves or others. And we should trust the government to be the authority to plan, implement, control and oversee such a process, because it has a tremendous track record.

Let me ask: were the bodies at least cold before this became a political poop-flinging affair this time?

The problem as I see it, and I was training to be an engineer with a strong backround in math theory, was a mind set that says for every problem, there is a solution. Now, maybe some of your ideas may decrease the number of incidences, but never eliminate them completely. But what makes your solutions non-viable is the legal ramifications. Without a complete cultural change and rewriting of the Constitution, most are a no-go.
