McCord was incredibly mundane, he didn't have to be a 1st round caliber QB, but he is definitely not a guy who is winning you any titles.
The portal isn't where you are going to find that though. They are in the portal for a reason. Not because they were winning titles.

Once in a long while there will be a winning lottery ticket, like a Kenneth Walker
or Joe Burrow. Or a guy like Justin Fields. They are few and far between though.

The portal should be used to add depth to a team and pick up guys as stop gaps.

I think stop gap is what we are going for this year. If they can get a guy who’s a decent passer with some running ability that at least gives us a shot. McCords zero running ability really hurt overall, it’s just much easier to defend when the QB is of no run threat. I know Stroud was never really a runner either but his passing talent was on another level where he could get away with it.

I'm not sure why cost would be a concern
I guess the way Day and everyone talks it makes me feel like there is limited NIL money to go around but a program as big as Ohio St is going to have the funds for a QB. I was thinking if we don’t get a big upgrade over McCord then it’s NIL money spent poorly since we could have just stuck with him for another year

Cam Ward is definitely an upgrade.
Maybe you are right, I would think some more mobility would help this offense

I don't think it's that there's "limited NIL funds to go around"

It's more that they have just made it clear that they aren't going to be handing blank checks to HS recruits and paying them more than established players on the roster just to sign on. It's a different game with a proven transfer though.

Someone who's got more field awareness than McCord plus a mobility aspect to their game is really all we need. We don't need Justin Fields this go around. There isn't a Fields caliber QB in the portal this year anyways. We can certainly upgrade over McCord though.

Cam Ward and Will Howard are the best options IMO, as them being only 1 year players helps in regards to keeping Kienholz and Noland around. Either would both be a "stop gap" that we could win with.

Any truth to this "Marvin Harrison getting top first round pick" NIL money rumor? Read it's like 25 mil and Trevyon Henderson is getting equal to what he would make in the NFL as well.

I still can't imagine MHJ stays but Henderson staying would be huge

If you listen to Bobby Carpenter, there is absolutely zero chance Ohio State's collectives are coming up with that kind of money for either of them.

I do think Trey might be coming back (based on insider opinions) but if Day lets Marv come back he should be fired. Coach needs to do what's in the best interest of the player.

Yeah... that's a crazy amount of money for any college player. But why take that if you're going to match (if not exceed) that with your signing bonus, and in returning he's risking his future earnings in the NFL if he gets hurt. He's a virtual lock to go top 5 and could very well go #1 overall.

At least with Henderson, he'd be trying to improve his draft stock.

Yep. He says he has goals to win the B1G and beat scUM but his number 1 goal should be to better himself and the NFL is where that is going to happen.

Go to your future MHJ and God bless

Yea, Marv would be dumb to come back, he really can only hurt himself at this point by doing that.

McCord is getting 1.67 million at Nebraska. I haven’t heard what Fleming will get at Nebraska

He was getting a decent amount at Ohio State too but I think it was the lower end of 7 figures.

Not sure about Fleming either. Those would be two great additions for you guys

There's been some speculation about McCarthy possibly returning (and I'd love to have another year of him), but I don't think it would make sense for him to return. He already projects as a 1st rounder and I'm not sure he'd really be able to really improve his stock significantly anyway, feels like he'd have a lot more to risk than to gain.

McCarthy seems like the type who might actually come back, even though I think that would be a dumb decision as well.

Reminds me of Matt Barkley, he was gonna go in the 1st round but came back, underperformed and got hurt, went from 1st round to 4th round. That's what you risk, not that McCarthy is assured to go on that same path. But it's not worth the chance at costing yourself a ton of money

If you're a 1st rounder you should always go.

Heck, RBs if you're projected in the top 3 rounds you should go. All another year is gonna do is make NFL teams look at you with another year of wear on your boys no matter how good a season

3 of the 4 Heisman finalists this year were portal transfer QB's. I'd say that's not once in a long while lol.

Have you followed college football at all in the last few years? Players enter the portal for all kinds of reasons, not the least of which now includes money. We're entering an era that's going to look like the exact opposite of what you're suggesting, programs that can afford it will fill in star players from the portal, and recruit out of high school for depth. It's way more comfortable to pick up a proven quarterback with a couple years of eligibility left than recruit several out of high school and hope one of them develops into what you need by the time you need them.

Times changed from, ugh, we got a grad transfer to fill in at QB for a year, really need to focus on developing one, to HOT DAMN! Which of these guys in the portal can we land?!

My guess is UW ends up with the Mississippi State QB

I had serious concerns/doubts about Penix coming in.

I won't second guess DeBoer again. :)

The bigger question will be can UW keep Grubb for yet one more year? It's going to be a tall order for both of our schools to keep their core staff in tact with all this national pub.
