USC/ND rivalry may be done after this year..........

Outside of the stretch with Pete Carroll, they've been irreverent going on 35 years now.
My theory remains. LA is a pro sports town. Last time there were two NFL franchises in LA the Trojans had perhaps their worst run in its history. There was hardly any fan interest.

ND won every game except 1 tie from 1983-95 and from ‘83 to Pete Carrol’s arrival USC only beat ND 3 times.

Who is?

What was the viewership rating for USC/ND last season? It wasn't reported.
Game was played in LA so you’d have to ask CBS

California is a pro sports state in general. Nobody here for the most part cares about college sports unless its fashionable to jump on a successful bandwagon (see the Pete Carroll era at USC)

Totally agree. Carroll's tenure is really the huge outlier of what they've been the last 4 decades or so. They've only finished in the top 10 two times since 1990 outside of the Carroll era and one of those times they were ineligible for postseason play. Lol. Even ND

I can't find 2023 viewership numbers either.

I assume they're top 5 for their respective weeks.
Couldn’t tell ya about 2023 but I was actually at that game, didn’t watch it on TV. That’s not relevant I just like to brag.

2023 above. There were multiple games on CBS last year that haven't been reported. CBS was in a dispute with Nielsen.

Lincoln Riley running away from the SEC and now ND

I remember there being some dispute last season.

I scrolled through the last couple years and couldn't find it. As I expected it was top 5 viewership for the week.

It's a good tv ratings game and I imagine the media's none to happy about losing it.

The game has historically drawn better when it's been played at the end of the season. The 2012 and 2018 games got monster ratings. 2012 was almost peak OSU/Michigan numbers.

Yeah, that would be my guess as well. I guess the timing was perfect for the Clemson series just in case SC pussies out.

ND is a much stronger national brand than USC

people overestimate how much people care about USC, people in California don't even care unless they are doing really well.
While true and IIRC, the B1G still wanted them bad enough to bring them in without a reduced payout. UCLA too.

That’s a big issue. OSU plays PSU, Oregon and Indiana while none of them play each other

Michigan’s win over OSU last year would have been devastating losses in the history of the rivalry prior to last season and would have been talked about for years to come, but now it’s just a footnote that was pretty well forgotten by non Michigan fans at halftime of the NCG. To me, what made CFB so great was the importance of every game. One loss could end your title hopes, and now it’s debatable if playing in the conference championship game is even worth it if you don’t need to win it to make it
All true. But Ohio State also lost to Va Tech in 2014, still got into the CFP and won a natty.

That was their only loss, and they dominated the B1G CCG. Michigan was their second loss last season and knocked them out of the CCG. They earned every bit of the natty, it doesn’t take away from that, just takes away the impact of what would have been a devastating loss to Michigan prior to last season

More expansion into the west coast market was the end game there

Same reason they took Rutgers & Maryland, for more east coast exposure.

The big boys are pretty much afforded 2 losses from the start of every year. You probably never will see a Ohio State, Bama, Texas, UGA type left out with 2 losses unless its a real funky year loaded with 1 loss teams.

Damn. Pretty much confirms Riley is indeed a pussy.

is this really on RIley??
Very well could be. But I thought ADs were always in on scheduling decisions as well.

I know I’m in the minority, and it would cost my school some cash, but EVERY team in the P2 and Second2 should play 11 of 12 games against upper level teams. Give ‘em one cupcake. That’s enough.

Then those schools that play fewer difficult OOC games don’t have an edge. jmo
