Happy Bobby Bonilla Day!

It's embarrassing because it brings up the Wilpons and Bernie Madoff every year

Wonder if the Mets will ever just terminate the contract early and buy it out. Guess that money in today's terms doesn't seem like much of an annual hit.

Exactly, it's chump change today.

There's 10 years left, he will be 72 when that last payment is made.

At this point, they should just embrace it. Make it a team holiday, everybody wear Bonilla patches on their jerseys, have Bobby show up at the ballpark...give the first 10,000 fans a copy of Bobby's contract

Shoot, sell enough merch and it pays for his annual annuity.

Fun anecdote time: I was at a game at Shea back when BB was playing. He was really getting crap from the fans, was going through a bad stretch. He came up to the plate and the fans started booing. I stood up and yelled, "I still believe in you, Bobby!" and he hit a double. Told everybody within earshot to "sit down and shut up, you never believed"

After decades of embarrassment, the organization finally embraced it and now lightly celebrates it. Might've had something to do with the change in ownership though.

I have a similar story.

I was in Milwaukee for a game (over a decade ago). It was the most boring game I've ever attended and it was about to go into extra innings. Corey Hart was at the plate and I hollered "alright Corey, knock this one out so we can all go home!" Very next pitch he knocked it out. Everyone around me gave me high fives and went home happy.

Yeah, it was that one. Coincidentally, against the Mets. Also coincidentally, the Brewers and Mets open a 3-game series today.

I remember that guy wearing his sunglasses when they really weren’t needed. Odd guy.

He had some solid production for a few years. Fan favorite. Still see Hart jerseys at games.

Fuck the Mets.

Based Bonilla

Bobby Bonilla is the real American Dream.

Sorry, Dusty.

Go get that money, Bobby Bo!

Just wait until we see what Ohtani’s annual payments will be once his contract is up. Like 90% of his 700 million dollar contract will be paid after his playing days are likely done

$68 million a year for 10 years, starting in 2034. Assuming California hasn’t imploded or sunken into the ocean by then, it’s hard to believe the Dodgers will be a winning team with a fifth of their payroll going to a legacy players.

A lot can happen between now and then, but their core is definitely getting old and expensive. They do maintain a good farm though, so who knows

But that is for Ohtani's benefit. Once he retires he can move somewhere without state income tax. If he got paid now he would pay California income tax on half the games. I love he is screwing the taxpayers of CA :dhd:

A smart bet would be further negotiations for Ohtani, maybe giving him a minor stake in ownership. Money coming in for a winning team is always more desirable than hoping you can compete with a significant handicap.

That could be an option but would have to be actually agreed via a contract once Ohtani is done playing. Active players can't have an ownership stake in any team.

That’s why I think it’s pretty much how it will go. The length of his playing contract takes him to age 40, which is a little crazy. Renegotiation / retirement seems more likely before 2034.
