Last movie you watched and rating (1-10)

Just watched His House on Netflix, RT has this at 100% certified fresh so I thought I would check it out.

In one sentence without giving anything away it is... A story about 2 refugees that are seeking asylum in England that are also haunted by their past.

I am being purposefully vague because I don't recall anyone posting about it yet. It is very well acted and generally and it looks good, there were some really nice transition scenes. It comes with a twist, an original story, and playing off of those... an ending that I wasn't sure the movie would do, but happy it did. It has some slight gore, some jump scares, and the movie primarily takes place in the house... and mostly one area of the house... because of that, even though I liked a lot about the movie, it still felt somewhat unfulfilled by the end. I wanted more out of the story and even though some scenes showed us what led them there and why these things are happening to them, I still felt that in the end it was a very generic supernatural story.

7 out of 10. Enjoyable.
 
I am 45 minutes into Birds of Prey and this movie is fucking awful (still watching as I am typing this). It is incredibly annoying that movies get good reviews or praise based on its political or social message. Putting that silly fucking girl power message aside, this movie is still hot garbage. The acting is lacking, the action fight scenes feel like a BAD professional wrestling match, the story, as well as the writing and character arcs, are incredibly bad. It is as if DC regressed and went back to making the Kilmer and Clooney style batmans. It's all about bright colors.

I know some people have seen this, please tell me ONE redeeming quality of this film aside from production value (even though quality is lacking in some points) and Margot Robbie being the beauty she is. Honestly, this is probably the worst blockbuster-style movie I have seen in a long while.

As of right now, 3 out of 10.

I assume most have already seen this and/or at least know what it's about. Anyway, has decent practical effects, some pretty bad acting at parts - specifically from the lead too. Interesting story. Interesting ending, could be open to a sequel... though it's been 40 years lol. Not that bad, nothing amazing...

5 out of 10. I feel I am being generous here, but whatever.

I saw this offered on HBO the other day and added it to my queue. I haven’t seen it 30+ years.

That was where I watched it too. I had never seen it before, so figured I would check it out. I was expecting more head explosions given that is basically what it is known for. The Boys easily has this beat lol.

It was a shock at the time. The big showdown at the end was epic for the time.

The Boys would not exist if it weren’t for the SFX of Scanners.
 
The Vast of Night... has anyone seen this yet? You can check it out on Amazon Prime.

It opens as if it is an episode of a show from the era, and it occassionaly bounces around to this mode of filming...

It is set in smalltown New Mexico in the 1950's and is about a 16-year-old switchboard operator and a local radio dj as they discover a strange frequency and attempt to make sense of it leading them down an interesting path. Given the context, you can already guess that this is about aliens. This is a fun film where it is truly about the adventure and not the payoff. The pacing is good, the characters keep it interesting. It is well acted, the production is good, the writing is good - they really gathered how people spoke back then which is nice.

It is a little Aaron Sorkin-y. For those that don't know what that means, basically you need to be paying attention. The characters speak fast and speak often. Typically I like Sorkins works (this one isn't), but it has to fit. Here it felt like too much, it didn't feel natural. Also, if you watch this movie, take the title as a hint... you better have all the lights off and no glare, because this movie is dark. I had all the lights off and still found it difficult to make some things out.

Fun movie. Ending was a little blah, but you totally see it coming. 7 out of 10.
 
Underwater.... SPOILERS BELOW!! I hadn't watched the trailer or anything, so I knew nothing coming in annnd I really want to like this movie, but I have a lot of problems with it. From the characters and writing to the science as well. It starts off with our protagonist brushing her teeth while a bunch of bangs and booms are going on. She looks worried but does nothing... like wtf. You know how deep you are, you should know how serious ANYTHING out of the norm would be, but no... she just casually continues brushing and then we see a spider. How in the fuck would a spider have made it or even be there in the first place is just stupid. Basically implying that someone knowingly or unknowingly brought it down... whatever, just a silly rant.

Anyway, it appears that this is going to be a survival film, but takes a turn into a creature feature. From this point on I got the feeling they were trying to be Alien under the water.... and I actually think it would have been better if they tried it that way, but no, there are a ton of more creatures and even a knockoff Cthulhu meets Kaiju from Pacific Rim at the end. The acting is pretty decent, I think roles like this are better for Stewart. She needs to find her inner Ripley and stop with other shit lol. TJ Miller provides some decent laughs, Cassel is solid. It tries on jumpscares, but nothing really works. The most thrilling moments were trekking through imploding parts of the ship. Production... the CGI isn't fantastic, but it is dark so it gets away with some of it. The ship, the suits, etc... all look good. The writing and story are a bit frustrating... as a whole, I see lots of potential, but as it played out... not that great. Its attempts at backstories were really weak and honestly pointless. There is a moment near the beginning where two people briefly discuss what they do here, I thought it was as a set up for how each would become useful throughout the film... well that never happened. Seemed like merely a way for us to know how our protagonist is capable of unlocking doors :L . But that is my point, it was wasted potential. The addition of so many creatures and then the mega monsters at the end just seemed like overkill. They survive explosions, implosions, wreckage/debris raining down, an impossible voyage, doing practically impossible feats in real life, then you throw in a new creature, then you throw in a bunch of new creatures..., then you throw in Cthulu... then you throw in suit damage and oxygen issues... like c'mon man lol. I like it when characters have to overcome adversity, but damn. Then you finish it all off with a monologuing martyr :rolleyes2:.

Idk if anyone bothered to read the headlines in the credits, but it is definitely open to a sequel lol.

I kinda ranted a bit. There was potential, but it never played out. I give it a 5.5 out of 10. Could have been a 7 if it brought the reigns in a little with the story and made us care about some of the characters.

Saw both movies a couple weeks ago on Prime.
Been thinking about both ever since and watching a few other UFO/NearDeathExp Documentaries.
