Many others pointed out the favorable conditions Vegas got to draft. The fact they are competing in Round 3 and have always made the playoffs reinforces my point: the team was allowed to be artificially loaded with talent at inception, rather than building like a respectable franchise. The NHL wanted a sustained success, rather than another Atlanta or Phoenix.

I'm not a fan of expansion (especially the draft) and haven't been since the league had 18 teams in the 70's, diluting the talent at the NHL level to expand was a huge mistake and the quality of the hockey has suffered.

At least they have real fans and support their team. It was a different NHL back then, but it didn’t worry so much about a catastrophic lack of fan support that they allowed them a super advantageous entry draft. In the end, Vegas is probably a bit better than Phoenix, but who knows by how much?

Pittsburgh had to be saved by the league several times, Carolina's arena was a ghost town just a few short years after they won the cup because the team sucked and last year I was in Sunrise, FLA for a Panthers/Bruins game and the only reason the place wasn't empty is because 8,000 Bruins fans were in attendance. Vegas will have a few years of success because of the way Bettman stacked the deck for them and then they will suck and everyone will wonder why there is a "Ice" rink in the middle of the desert.

Nah. As I said, my team beat Columbus, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay- none of which extorted concessions out of the rest of the NHL when they conducted their entry drafts. Plus, it had been around for over 40 years and had known highs and lows, while building a winning brand.
No team ever did what Vegas did. It wasn't the number of players they were allowed to take. It was extorting GMs over not touching the unprotected players. Negotiation was supposed to be allowed to facilitate discussions of contracts and salaries.

Fact is that Vegas could have taken whoever wasn't protected, but those teams made deals to keep players they couldn't protect because they felt that was in their best interest and Vegas obliged so long as it somehow benefitted them as well.
