Euro 2020 (err 2021 now)

Man, Denmark was by far not the better team out there. But damn they played their ass off. They just seemed wasted by extra time. I can’t imagine it was strategy to let England come at them the first half of extras. If it was that was dumb.

The PK from Sterlings run….that was pretty basic. I’ve seen worst muggings in the box, maybe even in this game. But, had the ref not called it any VAR would surely have backed it. There was little to overturn it either way.

Then it was just luck that Kane’s PK attempt came right back to him. After that the Danes had nothing left. But they ran with them hard for 90.

Looks like I’m rooting for Italy now (brutal).

Just listening to analysis on Sirius. They agree with you too. You totally nailed it. If penalty not called, VAR would not have overturned it, but since it was called, VAR was not going to overturn that either.

It was borderline call for sure...but England did deserve to win. Seemed Denmark was the better team up until the 38 minute mark, then all England including extra time. Denmark seemed to be playing for penalty kicks.

I have no skin left in this game but I do have a slight tilt to Italy. Emerson for Italy is going to have an issue defending England wings though. Sterling is going to give Italy problems for sure.

Good point on the final. I haven’t moved my thoughts to it yet, but you’re right. That injury gap in Italy’s defense will be just what someone like Sterling will look to use.

Sterling is one fast fucker. He's already zooming and suddenly he kicks into Flash mode...

I was ready for all the "spursy" comments if Kane failed on the PK...which he ultimately did but had the wherewithal to follow it up.

It's insane to me that England hasn't reached a EURO final in (probably) any of our lifetimes until now. Italy will be tough but I'll continue pulling for the Lions.

I’m pulling for them. I just never had that gene that makes me hate England and their fans. Maybe it’s me being a Philly guy. I totally get how the hate exists, just don’t have it.

This is potential history. Well, it already is since they made the final. They were already a decade past the WC win when I was born. I’ve always been for teams breaking the drought (Red Sox in 04, Cubs in 16, Eagles in 17, etc). This just fits with that.

All that said…if Denmark pulled it out I was going to be pulling for them anyway….because….Italy.

I get that for sure. As a relative newbie to the great game, I mostly pull for England simply because I have been following the EPL and im most familiar with all their players. I was definitely pulling for the Danes, especially following the Eriksen tragedy. If they were able to get past England, I would have felt good for them.

And you gotta root for streaks to be broken! Clearly, this points to a Browns super bowl in the near future.

English fans have been boorish and irritating a lot in the past. That’s help feed a hate if this country’s team….and a celebration of their shortcomings. Italy wins this weekend we will likely see a good bit of that come out.

The Browns will do it soon enough, and I will be cheering them….so long as they aren’t playing the Eagles in the SB. Ha.

Yeah I am hoping for the Browns at some point. I like new teams winning too, the Caps, Blues recently, maybe the Suns this year. I loved when the Eagles broke through especially since it was against Brady. My daughter went to college in Philly, lived in South Philly with her bf at the time, and became an Eagles and Phillies fan. Still is since her current bf is from Downingtown.

One team that will never break through is my beloved playoff underachieving San Jose Sharks. I have enjoyed sports glory for my teams except that one and I have been into sports since around 1969 (looking at my sports cards I have started from around then).

The Sharks will get there one day. And it will be vindictive. Promise that. That’s how 2017 felt with the Eagles. Felt like they would constantly end up one to a few steps short. And then that was over. I’m sure Red Sox, Cubs, Caps, Blues fans felt that way….and either Suns or Bucks fans will this year.

Teams like the Browns, Lions, Sharks, Maple Leafs, etc will be there someday soon.

Do you have a routing interest for the Euro final?

So, not only did an English fan blast Schmeicel in the eye with a laser pointer, but this leading up to it:

Not really. Germany, Sweden, or Poland are my interests.

Wow. Just heard about the laser pointer but did not see the ball.

Haven’t heard about the ball. The laser pointer I did. I’m not OK with it. But, he still blocked the PK. I’m not sure one could say he would have wrapped up the PK or punched it out cleaner if there was no laser, so I don’t think it truly had impact.

The ball is more egregious. Though, it was a ticky tack contact anyway. I don’t think the coverage on Sterling in the box gets better and cleaner if there wasnt a second ball on the field.

I guess UEFA is going to issue some penalty to England for the laser and some fireworks during the National Anthems. At this point, a penalty is anti-climatic. Who cares England is in the final no matter what.

P.S. Did anyone think it was weird seeing Grealish subbed on then off after 30 minutes? Disrespectful? I saw Hansi Flick do that to Sane this year once but Sane was an absolute shitshow when it happened. I didn't see Grealish do anything wrong. It kind hints that Grealish is subpar defensively though.

Philly guy...I could go for a Dinic's pork sandwich right now. Can't get a decent sandwich here where I am at. Last time I had one was 2014.

Its most likely that. The cameras followed him a bit after he got the hook. He wasn’t limping or anything….so the talk went to him being a defensive liability.
