Big 12 thread

Are they not already Cincy/Memphis level?

Wouldn't Cincy/Memphis be challenging the Orphan 8 (and even Texas) for #2 in the Big 12?

Either the Orphan 8 were a P5 'grind' or they weren't.
They don't mysteriously become G5 level because a (73 - 60) team for the past 11 years and a perennial CFP teams that's been feasting on those teams leave, do they?

I think it has to do with $$$$. Once the financial reality starts to take effect, the remaining Big12 teams won't be able to hold on to P5 Coaching Talent, maintain P5 facilities, etc. like they have been now (or at least some of them *looking at Kansas*).

So for 2-3 years after OU and Texas leave, they will still likely be competitive.

If they add some quality teams like the 4 listed, I can see them being like the Big East was from 2004 until it went defunct. A semi-P5 Conference.

Big12 desperately needs the 12-team playoff to stay relevant.

Brett McMurphy is saying the same thing now..could be official within the month. Yeah UT/ou will be playing in the SEC next season for sure, as the new four members begin play in the Big12.
How does the new schools coming in mean the Big XII will let UT & OU leave sooner ~ no pun intended?

It actually doesn't but we know OU and Texas are going to get out by next season.

That's not how it's being presented.

It's being presented that the Big 12 drops to G5 the moment TX/OU leave.

The Orphan 8 have been "sapping the money from TX/OU for years".

I think the four that are being mentioned to join would be in that perpetual group of Big 12 teams that are in the 6-3 to 3-6 range. I don't think they'd challenge for the title by qualifying to play in the CCG. But, I don't think they'd be bad either. I've said for a long, long time, the only real difference between the lower half of P5s and the upper half of G5s is the money they get. That's just my opinion but money does matter...especially in the other sports. Well, until NIL showed up. Now I have no frickin' idea what matters.

tbh, i'd watch the new Big XII if they added BYU, Boise State, Cincy and one of Memphis/UCF

Seems like it's going to be UCF, Cincy, BYU and Houston

No, they've been eating at the big trough OU and Texas brought to the party. Which of those remaining 8 do you believe brought a bunch of slop to the trough? Media wonks have said Big 12 revenue will drop by at least 50%. So, rational minds would think Texas and OU brought in 50% of that and the other 8 brought in 50%. (Probably more like Kansas hoops brought in 30% and the other 7 together brought 20% of the slop to the party.)

And I'm not ragging the Big 12. That's the same in all conference. Only a few can squeeze the networks and the others benefit.

Couldn't agree more.

As I said the 4 teams being added would be battling Texas and the Orphan 8 for 2nd place.

Im good with BYU,Cincy and UCF but the conference already has 264 teams in Texas, hard pass on UH, take Memphis.

TX/OU combined brought in 50% of the media rights revenue.

You could probably say same about every other P5 conference.

Houston BBQ>>Memphis BBQ

sunglasses deal with it GIF

just shows that the conference knows that this season is the last season UT/ou will be a part of this conference. Texas $9.95ers keep saying behind the scenes it's coming. If this was just a bluff or whatever. and the money was that important to the conference why expand now knowing the pie will get lower even if UT/ou give up their share? For once, they are looking out for the longterm.

lmao @ the fixation on having four Texas teams

Houston doesn't add anything

Houston may be getting a nod due to pressure on TCU Baylor and Tech from the Texas legislature.

That being said I don't see the need to add 4. BYU adds value. The other 3 may but it feels like keeping everything at 10 would bring more $$/school than going to 12. There is a rumor that the conference is taking 4 because they know 2 more are about to bolt. I'm guessing that is wishful thinking but it's not unplausable.
