Let's take a moment to laugh at Mike McCarthy

And in that moment you manage the game as the coach. That play should have been off the table there.
It was an incredibly stupid decision plus the Cowboys committed stupid penalties the entire game.

To be fair….the officiating this weekend has been straight shit almost across the board. This is the right way to say it. I can’t say it as even the gripes I have from my teams game wasn’t putting us back in it, but you can surely say that this way about this game.

It just should have been more reason that run at the end shouldn’t have been on the table.

I like your team less than any other….and even I can say that’s a fucked way for the season to go down.
Goodell is obsessed with social justice issues when he should be more concerned with the inept officiating throughout the league. The official blowing the inadvertent whistle during the Raiders/Bengals game is just one example. Goodell seems more suited for political office.

Ok. I was saying nothing about that. Frankly the commish of the league should be able to handle doing both things.

But, glad to see you still have your hang ups….

This ^^^ is what they're referencing when focusing on the refs performance...not just the ball set at the end which IMO wasn't on the refs.

The first Niners drive there were at least 4 holds that should have been called.

On the 9ers first TD there were 3 holds just on that one play. :L

And again, the Cowboys were set at 7 seconds. They were running back on the field at the 15 second mark. This kind of shit isn't new. The official scratching his dick in the middle of the line for 6 seconds is new though.

You are correct. The defense definitely had reasonable time to do their subs. The ump didn’t need to hold up time for the extra ~four seconds.
But Dallas was still stupid for trying their fuckery instead of just taking advantage of the successful fake punt.
and then on top of all that, just take the damned time out. There’s 13+ minutes left. You don’t know if you’ll need that third time out at the end of the half no matter if you’re currently down 23-7.
stupid all around

If a substitution is made by the offense, the offense shall not be permitted to snap the ball until the defense has been permitted to respond with its substitutions. While in the process of a substitution (or simulated substitution), the offense is prohibited from rushing quickly to the line of scrimmage and snapping the ball in an obvious attempt to cause a defensive foul (i.e., too many men on the field). If the offense makes a late substitution, the following occurs:

a) The Umpire will stand over the ball until the Referee deems that the defense has had a reasonable time to complete its substitutions.

b) If a play takes place and a defensive foul for too many players on the field results, no penalties will be enforced, except for personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct, and the down will be replayed. At this time, the Referee will notify the head coach that any further use of this tactic will result in a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Note: The quick-snap rule does not apply after the two-minute warning of either half, or if there is not a substitution by the offense.

c) On a fourth-down punting situation, the Referee and the Umpire will not allow a quick snap that prevents the defense from having a reasonable time to complete its substitutions. This applies throughout the entire game.

d) If the play clock expires before the defense has completed its substitution, it is delay of game by the offense.”

All on Dak.

Low football IQ players that don't know you give the ball to the official after the play.

Larry Fitzgerald was the master of that in the final minute of the game.
Whoever called the play is also a dumbass.

Could have thrown to the end zone 3 times from where they were before the run. Really no excuse for running up the middle of the field with no timeouts in that situation.

So I heard an interesting take on this play that made it make a little more sense to my mindbrain. And it makes a fair amount of sense if Dallas were to have pulled it off correctly.

The story is that Dallas had 2 plays called in the huddle: the fake punt + a quick followup play. The idea here is if the fake works, line up and run another scripted play quickly with the opposition special teams still on the field. You can quickly line up and run a wildcat style play with maybe a go-route attached. No one on the Defense will know what to do, so SF will probably be forced to call their timeout or risk a huge play.

HOWEVER, the Dallas sidelines went bananas after the fake punt worked and several people ran on to the field. This constituted a "substitution", so SF was allowed time to put their regular defense on the field. Dallas had the scripted play ready, but vs the normal defense, it no longer made sense to run. They were left undecided for too long and eventually pulled their ST off the field for the Offense...and the umpire had to AGAIN pause play to allow for a defensive substitution. This confusion is what eventually led to the delay of game.

It's a similar take to what Arizona did to fool Dallas earlier this year. That game, AZ ran their kicker on, which Dallas saw and ran on their ST unit. However, Kyler was still on the field and AZ lined up in normal offense. Dallas had to panic and take a timeout.

I guess a 30-40 yard pass has a better completion percentage than a 50+. SF was lined up to prevent another sideline route, so the yards up the middle were free for the taking. There's some small advantage you can gain if you get extra yards, line up & spike the ball the next play.

Still, the risk-reward of such a move with no timeouts is off the charts too risky. Any sensible coach would have squashed the idea.

3 50 yard attempts > zero 30 yard attempts.

It was second and one. Imo the worst time to run regardless of time and time outs left.

There are breakdowns of the play and what "should" have happened all over the place today. On paper, it works fine if you have enough time (17-20 sec). You run a quick draw up the middle for 10ish yards, get down, hand the ball to the ref, and snap/spike the ball with 5 sec left. It failed for a multitude of reasons:

1. Dallas only had 14 sec, which is less than the optimal breakline for this sort of play.
2. Dak carried the ball too far, wasting a few precious seconds
3. No one handed the ball to the ref, wasting another few seconds
4. Dallas did not rush back to the line
5. Ultimately, there were only 3 sec left as the ref was finally looking to place the ball. It takes 2 sec to snap and spike, so they had no time left to do even that.

I'm definitely not defending the playcall in this instance. IMO, it's far too risky. But, it might have worked if they had a little more time to work with. They didn't and the fact that the coaching staff still chose to run that play just adds fuel to the narrative that McCarthy is terrible with clock management. They needed perfect execution on the play to make it work in that short a timespan. Just stupid to try it.

You can’t run the ball there.
