Not a very pretty sight rankings wise... but then again, we focused more on the portal than on signing day. That said... closed decently well. A better class than I thought we were going to sign two months ago:

247Sports Composite - 41st (2 [four stars] 16 [three stars]) 10th in B1G

247Sports -
43rd (3 [four stars] 14 [three stars] 1 [two star]) 11th in B1G

Rivals -
38th (3 [four stars] 15 [three stars]) 9th in B1G

ESPN -
61st (3 [four stars] 15 [three stars]) 14th in B1G

On3 -
42nd (3 [four stars] 12 [3-stars] 3 [not rated]) 10th in B1G

Jimmy Fallon Hello GIF by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

We have until January 14th for the dead period to lift... I think we're looking to add 1-2 more high school players (if they're the right ones) and 1-2 more portal players. Definitely a portal QB... smoke around Casey Thompson from Texas being the guy, but we'll see.

I think we're looking for at least one more OL transfer, maybe two QBs...

Chubba Purdy (QB transfer from FSU) will be visiting next weekend. There's still some smoke around Casey Thompson but that seems to be precarious with the opening at OU... although... OU just got a commit from Dillon Gabriel who HAD been committed to UCLA... and UCLA is looking to bring in... Caleb Williams who just left OU.

Portal is crazy.

I'm too lazy to look it up. Is Purdy from Scottsdale?

i'm not really paying attention to the QB market. i thought we were looking for an experienced QB, since our current best QB appears to be Logan and he's a Sophomore with 1 start. Purdy doesn't have much more experience than Smothers, looks like he might have started 1 time back in 2020, so why is he an upgrade?

I'd also rather take a guy that knew how to win last year. Looking at 247's list of QBs in the portal without a home: Caleb Williams from OU or this Cameron Ward from FCS. Connor Bazelak from Mizzoo maybe, Zach Calzada from A&M? Those are the top 4 on the list, not sure if the rankings by them are old HS rankings or include college stats, but other than Connor at Mizzoo with only 6 wins, all those schools had pretty good seasons.

I think we're looking to take more than one QB if we can... not sure that will work out, but I think that's the plan. Casey Thompson is our best bet out of the group.

Ward is probably the #1 transfer QB and I doubt he's considering a 3-9 team from the B1G.

Bazelak is from B1G country so he COULD be an option, though, I've heard that Cincinnati is probably the best bet for his services, Kentucky could also be another option as he was high on them out of high school.

Zach Calzada is another interesting name, early indications are that Auburn is the team to beat there.

So I'm not sure the options are great on any of those guys, but I am sure we've reached out to all of them. Purdy is not much more experienced than Smothers, you are correct, but Whipple had tabbed him as the heir apparent to Pickett when he was at Pitt so that is why we are going after him. Casey Thompson has interest in Nebraska... we'll see what answers come. Hopefully this helps.

thanks nut, glad to have you back. i was just trying to understand, as i don't really follow the recruiting part that close.

no problem, that's what I'm here for! Hopefully we hear some good news on that front soon... with news of Nadab Joseph and Chris Walker no longer being on the roster that means we have 4-5 spots available to fill by Jan. 17...

I'm sure we'll dip back under 85 at the end of spring and then we'll play the portal game a bit more in the summer. I think we're looking at bringing in 8-10 portal guys going into 2022.

Nebraska is looking to add a DB either from HS or from the portal again... A name that's surfaced via Rivals is Kylon Griffin from Montgomery, AL. Sounds like he'll be visiting the weekend of January 14th.

Also... there are some rumblings that Casey Thompson was in lincoln today for a self guided tour... don't know if that's true or not, but it's out there.

Ear to the ground moment:

Things are picking up steam for Nebraska to pick up Purdy AND Thompson... I think we'll know in two weeks if that's the case. Maybe sooner with Thompson. Though Oklahoma seems to be a team to look out for there.

Also, Nebraska wants to bring in a Nose Tackle via the Portal and then the best available after that... I think they might want to add another DB, Edge Rusher, OL, WR, or RB. I think they will have space to add 2-3 of those positions but likely not ALL of them will be added prior to spring. If I were to guess I would guess this way:

QB - 2 from portal
RB - 1 from portal or HS
DB - 1 from HS or portal
OL - 1 from portal
Edge Rusher/WR - 1 from portal

I think we add 6 more players before June. Maybe only 3-4 before Feb 2nd

I've heard a rumor on Caleb Williams, possible interest for NU. Anyone hear this?

Would NU/Frost be interested?
