GAME 2023 NFL Draft Thread

you don't spent the 12th pick on a complimentary back.

Starting RB and dynamic weapon who replaces a guy who — if we’re being honest — lost us games last year we would won if he were healthy enough to play more snaps in.

We missed the playoffs by one game because of Swift. You really think Jamal Willians gets 17 scores if Swift isn’t always hurt?

So we’re all in agreement, Pats won the first round!

You lost those games because you literally had the worst defense in football. Your offense was top 5 in total offense and PPG, so no Swift didn't lose you games. You couldn't stop anyone, especially through the air. Campbell is a solid LB but not at a premium price. You missed the playoffs by one game because you had two losses where you scored 35 and 45 points. It's clear to everyone that defense was the issue.

Thing is, I think both Gibbs and Campbell will be good players, but those just aren't spots to use premium picks on. If you're paying Monty $6m a year, you don't spent the 12th pick on a complimentary back. Like you said, Gonzalez or any of the other highly rated CBs should have been the pick. Hell, I think it would've made even more sense for them to double dip CB in the first round than go for a RB and off ball LB. If you wanted a complimentary back to Monty, I thought Achane from A&M would've made a lot more sense in the 3rd round.

Branch was a really nice pick, and he's going to help fill the void when CGJ likely leaves, but like you said - the cupboard is bare after that. Hooker and LaPorta were really good picks, but they could've done way more with the window they have open.
I think 2023 that Detroit will be stacked. Once CGJ and Moseley leave though for big contracts -- that is when we will regret not taking a CB to replace them, while giving them a year to get acclimated to the league as well. Or we will regret not drafting a DE or DT to take some of the double teams away from Hutchinson, who was doubled more than anyone else last year.

It is all a guessing game, but to me, if you can fill a premium position with a high end player on a rookie contract. You HAVE to do it. It gives you 20-25 million to spend elsewhere.

If Carter wasn’t filled with red flags he would have gone earlier than 6 anyways. Bears took two DT’s after R1 after passing on Carter. His own coaches said don’t draft him. Can’t sell me that passing on him for a star weapon was a bad move.

Campbell went exactly where he was supposed to go, in R1. Top MLB the draft. And we got Brian Branch, the top S in the draft. Taking them in an order you don’t agree with doesn’t mean the D wasn’t addressed.

Kiper and McShay did not write that Lions pick analysis, fruitcake! ...some amateur wannabe "journalist" with a mock draft blog did. :laugh3:

It’s sad how slow Packers fans are. 🙄

Packers traded Brian Branch to the Lions for a 5th round pick and took 2 TE’s in R2.

Anyone want to talk about that?

I give the Niner draft a C or C-.

Got a good safety with our first pick in rd 3, but then reached for a kicker and backup TE. Who made those picks?

The grownups apparently came back into the room for Day 3 b/c those Day 3 picks were what saved the grade from being a D or an F.

I wasn't talking about Carter, you guys should've have gone CB. Branch is nice, don't get me wrong, but after 2023 that's all you're gonna have for sure. Campbell is a fine player but again, not a premium position. Also, he might have been the top ranked MLB on Detroit's board, but that doesn't mean he was the top rated MLB overall. I largely saw Trenton Simpson or Drew Sanders at that spot more than Campbell, and they were smartly taken in the 3rd round because that's where you take an off-ball LB. Those two picks just didn't make any sense, no matter how you slice it.

It's funny how tightly Lions fans cling to any glimmer of hope. ..."This guy wrote something nice about my team, he's my BFF now!" :laugh3:

Packers drafted for '24 and beyond. There is no cap money in '23 to improve the team. Hell, it'll take restructuring a contract or 2 just to fill the roster with warm bodies. I have no problem with drafting raw players.

Analysis: The Lions made two surprising picks in the first round, though Gibbs can be explosive and Campbell will be an immediate contributor on defense. Picking LaPorta to replace the traded T.J. Hockenson over Michael Mayer and Luke Musgrave was interesting. Trading up for Branch and Hooker were both wise moves, while trading multiple picks to get a nice athlete in Martin seemed a bit impatient.

Unsurprisingly, after the Gibbs pick, the Lions moved on from former second-round pick D’Andre Swift for a swap of seventh-rounders with the Eagles and a 2025 fourth-round pick. They only had two picks on Day 3 after trades, though I liked Sorsdal as a top-150 selection moving from tackle to guard in the NFL and Green could become a deep threat in
