Looks like someone was told he was going to be kicked to the curb for a transfer to be named later

His commitment never made much sense with them already bringing in Akili Smith Jr and having Dante Young supposedly taking over next year. He must really suck if they can't trust him going into his junior season.

Likely assumed that for that much money they were going to give him the starting spot to lose. Got in the QB room and realized he was going to sit for a year or more. Saw the dollar signs and forgot about the future.

Was he set up to start as a true freshman though? It's not like he's some can't miss prospect. It'd be a ballsy (and idiotic) move from Lanning to even hint at that being the case.

No clue what was promised, but someone probably was in his ear telling him that no one is going to sit someone making that much money. It's the NFL way of thinking, you don't sit the guy making 100m (unless you are ATL) for a rookie.

He was committed to Cal for a long time, then after he signed all of Cals qbs left.

Would not be surprised if he ends back there

rumor i'm hearing is that he was locked in at Cal.. but leading up to ESD.. the Cal QB (Mendoza?) apparently was shit talking him on the phone.. This pissed him off so much, that to the surprise of Cal and even Oregon.. he flipped to the Ducks.

Cal fans (the dozens and dozens of them) were pissed at Mendoza, and he eventually hit the portal anyways.

Not that it matters, but Oergon losing this guy and another guy who never signed drops out of the no. 1 spot in the Composite. Now

Texas
Bama
UGA

With another year like 2024, how long are we looking at Bama getting top 5 classes?

Good question ... depends on what Bama does this coming year. If they lose 3-4 games and miss the CFP, I can see the magic touch coming off a bit. But, at the end of the day, Bama is Bama. They have a lot of money. SEC affiliation. Location. I was surprised by how well they did this year.

If going 9-4 is a surprising amount of success, it's way worse than I realized.

You're missing the point entirely. These kids are all either going to better programs than the one they were currently at, or are going somewhere that's going to pay them more. Saying kids only enter the portal because there's an issue with them at all is just flatout wrong.
I'm putting this here so I don't get accused of trolling again.

Sure, but in my original statement I was considering "comes from a smaller school" as "something wrong with them". There's a difference between LSU grabbing Joe Burrow or Texas grabbing Ewers from Ohio State because he's buried on the depth chart, and Ohio State grabbing Will Howard, the starter, from Kansas State.

My point is that it's pretty rare for an elite starter at an elite school (top 20?) to up and bolt to another. There's usually something that's causing them to flee -- coaching change being the primary one.

Which back to the point about Michigan not picking up any elite WR's -- there really weren't any. They're all somewhat throwing a dart against the board hoping something sticks. I think there might have been 1-2 decent WR's in the portal class and that's about it. The three WR's in the portal class combined for 9 total TD's this year. That's 1 less than Ohio State's 2nd best receiver this year.

So to that extent I think adding McCulley was actually a pretty solid get for us. He was injured at the start of the year, coming off a 2023 season where he outscored every single one of the top 3 WR prospects in the portal, and all big ten honorable mention. Gives us good height that we desperately needed (6-5) and pairs nicely with the smaller Anthony Simpson they picked up. Who also had an early injury after a breakout 2023 season where he logged almost 800 yards receiving.

But also, here's hoping Andrew Marsh is as good as advertised. I think we'll have significantly more WR talent next year than we had this year.
