UVa just announced it, definitely true. Tony stepping away abruptly like this makes me think he has something personal going on. I don't think he just decided he was bored.
 
Wow. Tony Bennett retiring. Ton of great coaches have now left in the last couple years.

Wake's Rivals writer and former Winston-Salem Journal beat writer strongly believes this is so Ron Sanchez can replace him. obviously, Bennett hasn't had the best time in adapting to the current landscape. speaks volume of his as a coach how UVa has still been a

that doesn't explain the June contract extension tho.

yeah, but you could always count on UVa being a Q1 or Q2 game under Bennett. If there's a fall off at UVa, it hurts the conference.

I’ll take it. He always had Clemson’s number. Granted the next guy could too, but I’m holding out hope to actually see some basketball played.

Could he not have done this in July with the same outcome? The contract extension is puzzling though.

I hope it's nothing serious with his health.

Ron Sanchez makes sense. This timing still doesn't make sense though.
 
I still think there's something personally wrong w/Bennett. Sign an extension over the summer and then leave 2 weeks before the season starts? You never hear anyone have anything bad to say about him. He's a model coach and an even better person. All the UVa social media channels are in overdrive thanking Bennett for all he's done. I don't think that would be the case if Bennett just up and decided to quit.

fwiw, i thought Sanchez was doing a decent job at Charlotte. Wasn't in any danger of losing his job, but he decided to go back to Uva as Bennett's top assistant after 2023. decent chance this has been in the works for a while.

goes back to the Steve Forbes rotary meeting i attended a few months back.

college basketball coaches hate the new system. you're going to see many of these guys retire sooner than later.

Unfathomably bad timing.

His players should have a free pass to transfer where they want and play spring semester if they wish.
