Not sure OUs defense can hold Waxahachie High to 13 points.

I'm at the end of my patience with OU playing shit defense. Think about this: if someone could guarantee Nick Saban his team would score exactly 35 points every game they played this season or he could just take his chances on his offense would he jump at the guaranteed 35 points? You bet he would. Now same question to Lincoln Riley. Riley would faint. I don't think we've found our D Coordinator yet. Grinch already looks like he's close to his ceiling because the players still aren't doing what everybody keeps saying they should do. What's it going to take for Lincoln to make another change? Another ugly loss to Texas like the one that finally cost Mike Stoops his job? I don't operate my businesses in a panic mode. But when I know we've had a problem in a certain area, I'm more apt to make a fast decision to replace/augment personnel because I know it's our weakness. Grinch needs help or a bus ticket. This weekly heaving crap shoot is killing OU every year.

They need to recruit better DL where they won't have to depend on stunts and twists to penetrate. I love Clayton who's in the 21 class..he's a pure pass rusher.. it's the other guys I don't have a clue about.. Gotta keep stacking DLs..preferably DTs that weigh over 290 graduating high school

That would obviously be of tremendous help but we've been down so long on D that recruiting those kinds of players is extremely difficult. We used to have some great DL's but we had a history of them back then. Now? Mike and Bob's legacies are still haunting OU.

when Muschamp gets canned.. wonder if Lincoln would go after him.. he runs a basic defense BUT the guy can recruit..

Grinch is a very good coach. But Riley keeps insisting on keeping the team's focus on the O during the recruiting.

In 2019 we had 24 Enrollees and 14 of them were offensive players/10 defensive players. We had 4 transfers and 3 of them were offensive players. Result: 17 Offense/11 Defense

In 2020 we had 23 Enrollees and 14 of them were offensive players/9 defensive players. We had 5 transfers and all 5 of them were offensive players. Result: 19 Offense/9 Defense

It's gotta stop. We need to up the number of defensive recruits. Lincoln Riley has the luxury of having oodles of players to select from to keep the Offense humming while the Defense is being treated like an after thought. If someone on the offense isn't cutting the mustard they know they can get replaced pronto. The lack of depth on the defensive side keeps Alex Grinch from benching people when they are playing like morons or obviously just don't have enough talent to run his system. One side of the ball is living on filet mignon while the other side is living on a steady diet of hamburger helper. It's not rocket science. My theory is Lincoln Riley still isn't comfortable enough in his own job to take a chance yet on reducing the offensive pool of talent even a hair in order to beef up Grinch's side of the ball. If so, then we're not going to see any real change in the team's overall performance unless lightening strikes and that's like putting all your faith in double zero on a roulette wheel. If you could get Alex Grinch drunk enough I'm pretty sure he would admit he's fighting with a lot shorter stick than Riley is.

Riley needs to groom somebody to take over the offense and be the head coach for everyone and this will improve.

By the way, what a shit show this season appears to be for the Big 12. I think it's going to be fun to watch at least.

That could be the answer if it was the offense struggling but that isn't the case. It's the defense that sucks. Riley's one of the best offensive minds in college or pro football so we would never be able to upgrade or even maintain the same level of offensive excellence unless Riley is The Man running the O. He just needs to start allowing more recruits to come in on the other side of the ball so when we have defensive players who are total busts or under-performers or injured we have some depth to correct the situation. Grinch is working hard to build something but he needs more tools to find the right combination of players.

To me it's not really a shit show.. it's entertaining as hell.. outside Kansas, seems everyone is game for a win.

He’s singularly focused on one side of the ball. That isn’t healthy for the team. Even Saban lets a coordinator run his defense. Just for appearances to the team. Riley is better than most at balancing this but I can’t really remember a head coach calling plays and winning titles recently

Think Jimbo was the last HC/OC right?

You make a good point about Saban. I'm just not sure Riley has the confidence to do it yet, especially with Rattler being a babe in arms. Riley's play calling in tough situations has sometimes shown he's still feeling his way through his job description. It's baffling how the team can suddenly fall apart at times and that's typically been on the D side of the ball. But we've also seen Riley get a case of the yips more than once on offense. Best example was not trusting the offense to go for it against Georgia on 4th down in overtime with the Heisman winner at QB and two other offensive All-Americans on the field with him too. So we blew the field goal try and then folded defensively on Georgia's next possession to lose the game. There is a lot of mystery right now which OU team is going to show up each quarter, let alone each game. Still, a large part of the solution has to be recruiting more and better players on defense.

I agree. If Texas was supposed to be near the top and Tech was supposed to be near the bottom........................
