Grinch is a very good coach. But Riley keeps insisting on keeping the team's focus on the O during the recruiting.
In 2019 we had 24 Enrollees and 14 of them were offensive players/10 defensive players. We had 4 transfers and 3 of them were offensive players. Result: 17 Offense/11 Defense
In 2020 we had 23 Enrollees and 14 of them were offensive players/9 defensive players. We had 5 transfers and all 5 of them were offensive players. Result: 19 Offense/9 Defense
It's gotta stop. We need to up the number of defensive recruits. Lincoln Riley has the luxury of having oodles of players to select from to keep the Offense humming while the Defense is being treated like an after thought. If someone on the offense isn't cutting the mustard they know they can get replaced pronto. The lack of depth on the defensive side keeps Alex Grinch from benching people when they are playing like morons or obviously just don't have enough talent to run his system. One side of the ball is living on filet mignon while the other side is living on a steady diet of hamburger helper. It's not rocket science. My theory is Lincoln Riley still isn't comfortable enough in his own job to take a chance yet on reducing the offensive pool of talent even a hair in order to beef up Grinch's side of the ball. If so, then we're not going to see any real change in the team's overall performance unless lightening strikes and that's like putting all your faith in double zero on a roulette wheel. If you could get Alex Grinch drunk enough I'm pretty sure he would admit he's fighting with a lot shorter stick than Riley is.
LSU says hey..."Offense puts asses in the seats, Defense wins Championships"

I actually threw TRow an “Ask the Coach” question about this very thing last week. I asked if they had shifted any recruiting effort and resources to the defensive side of the ball, since LR’s offense simply sells itself. That could be the answer if it was the offense struggling but that isn't the case. It's the defense that sucks. Riley's one of the best offensive minds in college or pro football so we would never be able to upgrade or even maintain the same level of offensive excellence unless Riley is The Man running the O. He just needs to start allowing more recruits to come in on the other side of the ball so when we have defensive players who are total busts or under-performers or injured we have some depth to correct the situation. Grinch is working hard to build something but he needs more tools to find the right combination of players.
I hear Mike Riley is available. So who will be the next coach for Texas?
I hear Mike Riley is available.
There’s no fan base stupid enough to think he would win more if he had more resources...He's 70-77 in conference games as a HC at the P5 level. However, if he was at Texas, he would win championships.
He was offered the job at Alabama and turned it down in the early '00s. I think he would have done okay (winning seasons and Bowl Games) at Alabama but not won any Championships. He's 70-77 in conference games as a HC at the P5 level. However, if he was at Texas, he would win championships.
Texas tends to hire coaches that have beaten OU or formally coached at OU. Herman was picked b/c he beat OU(from Houston)the year before. Mack Brown was an OU A/C. So, Chris Kleiman will get an offer.I hear Mike Riley is available.
As much as I want to shit on this take.. it's a big reason why Herman was hired.. the win vs FSU, ou and getting a 5star DT to UH had our no experienced AD listening to boosters who are just regular impulsive fans. Sad part is that they had to give TH everything he wanted because they had no plan B at all.Texas tends to hire coaches that have beaten OU or formally coached at OU. That wouldn’t be as funny as Mike Riley.Texas tends to hire coaches that have beaten OU or formally coached at OU. Herman was picked b/c he beat OU(from Houston)the year before. Mack Brown was an OU A/C. So, Chris Kleiman will get an offer.
Funny thing, I think Kleiman is a legit coach. Texas would never hire him, because he isn’t viewed as trendy and in demand, but they will and have done worse than KleimanTexas tends to hire coaches that have beaten OU or formally coached at OU. Herman was picked b/c he beat OU(from Houston)the year before. Mack Brown was an OU A/C. So, Chris Kleiman will get an offer.
What is the deal with the Big12 defenses? In the 1990s and early 2000s, the Big12 was known for defenses. It seems like lately, they have just fallen off the world. Is it something to do with the high school football talent? Coaching?
OU won its national title under Stoops with defense. They need to get back to focusing on it to win another championship.
This is just my opinion....and I don't know about the other places. We've gone ape shit crazy with 7 on 7 here in Texas...and I mean ape shit crazy. It has produced and still produces a lot of great QBs and WRs along with some DBs that can cover real well....BUT CAN'T FRICKIN' TACKLE! And it has de-emphasized the line play on both sides of the ball. Again, JMO.What is the deal with the Big12 defenses? In the 1990s and early 2000s, the Big12 was known for defenses.
