Big East Basketball

DePaul is up by 23

Kennesaw State up by 2 at the half against Creighton.

Hasn’t been pretty. But unlike a lot of teams so far. Avoided the upsets.

This year gonna take our licks against real teams. But damn the potential is there.

Biggest issue is while we have size(in height and length) our inexperience and lack of college strength is killing on the boards. Great second half tonight. But low majors are hurting us on the boards for long stretches.

Team can’t shoot for shit. But it’s clear Shaka is giving everyone the green light. Let it develop over time. Need Elliott to not get suspended anymore.

Morsell won’t keep setting career highs every night against real teams. But what a god send he’s gonna be this year. The way he plays is gonna set the tone for the young guys years down the road.

Now let’s just pray the Illinois game isn’t a wire to wire boat race

KenPom ratings on 11/15:

1. Villanova (8th nationally)
2. UConn (21st nationally)
3. Seton Hall (35th nationally)
4. Xavier (37th nationally)
5. St. John's (46th nationally)
6. Butler (61st nationally)
7. Creighton (68th nationally)
8. Providence (78th nationally)
9. Georgetown (89th nationally)
10. Marquette (95th nationally)
11. DePaul (128th nationally)

Well, an 8-3 non con is better than I coulda ever hoped(yes UCLA will be a loss).

Still can’t shoot for shit but whatever. Would be nice if Kolek found his shot and stopped shooting like Derrick Wilson. His play making is incredible tho.

One downside is this year is more about the future and sadly Lewis might not be part of it. Guy might play himself into being drafted(even tho I think he needs at least 1 more year.)

I think Shaka does better with under the radar hustle guys.

They might need to beat UCLA to get themselves on the bubble tho.

Can’t remember who said it, but this Marquette-UCLA game is a matchup of the only coaches to take teams from the First Four to the Final Four.

On the bubble is so relative.

Go 10-10 in BE play and I’ll take our chances.

i don’t expect that tho. Our current 6 game gauntlet is insane. Just beating Kstate is a victory.

Shaka is perfect here though. All I care about is having a team that once again people hate to play and the players like to player here.

Also, not bad having a Nova white boy at guard that everyone hates……hopefully ours learns to shoot

its possible that his run at VCU was a fluke

VCU had success before Smart and they have had success since he's been gone.

That can be said of many coaches since the same coaches tend to get recycled, but ya, it may be true, we'll see.

I assumed .500 in league play with UCLA win gets you in.

I think 7 competitive teams this year.

G'town, Butler stink. And I bet DePaul stinks again too. Creighton also looks bad.

Worth mentioning that VCU's run started with Jeff Capel. The same Jeff Capel that flopped at Oklahoma and is currently flopping at Pitt. His replacement at VCU, Anthony Grant, kept the ball rollin' at VCU and then flopped at Alabama.

It's a definite possibility.

I do think Shaka's tenure at VCU was alot better than Capel or Grant though. Even if you take away the FF.

2013 - #5 seed
2014 - #5 seed
2015 - #7 seed

They would have made the tournament as an at large in 4/5 years there with them making it in 2011 and getting to the FF. Grant was 11 seed, NIT, 11 seed. Both times getting in via the auto bid. I'm not sure they make either if they don't win the CAAT. And Capel's only tournament team was the one that went up against WF in 04. They aren't getting in without the auto bid.

Smart had them going as a top 25 program his last 3 years there. Grant had them top 50, Capel top 75ish. They've been a really consistent program, but Smart had them operating at their highest. With that said, he failed in a big way at Texas.

My general point is that meh coaches have fluke runs all the time and Smart accomplished what he did at an established mid-major program. He didn't have to rebuild VCU. VCU being able to sustain their success over five different coaching staffs is something you have to consider when evaluating Capel, Grant, Smart, Wade and Rhoades.

I was 21 the last time Shaka Smart won an NCAAT game. I turned 30 a month ago. During that time period, he spent six years at Texas. He had one top 25 team there. Unlimited resources and he couldn't get the job done. I'm getting to the point where Smart is probably nothing more than an average coach.

Dont think the judgment can be made yet. Marquette and how he does here will be the true judgment.

When you have 1 good stop and 1 bad job. You can kinda flip it and call the bad one the fluke just the same.

Also, he wasn’t a disaster at Texas just disappointing for a school like that with no tourney success. He routinely had top 40 defenses and developed players solidly.

I just don’t think that type of job was the right fit for him. Marquette makes way more sense for him as a way bigger version of VCU. He coulda been in 8 years ago. But I get why he wanted to try Texas.

I agree the foundation was already in place. VCU was a good program. IMO, Shaka took them up even another level. They were a top 25 program his last 3 years there. While Capel and Grant laid a good foundation, Shaka took the program up a level. Also had he not left for Texas, he was getting set to enroll a ridiculous class that would have included Jordan Murphy(Minnesota), Kenny Williams(UNC), Tevin Mack(Texas) and Samir Doughty(Auburn) all ended up decommitting or transferring a year into it. Also, Terry Larrier was a top 40 kid in 2014 that transferred out after he left. They would have been loaded the next 3/4 years IMO.

Bad OOC showing.

The fact that Nova is still up in the metrics shows the bias of those.

BE as a whole did well, would have helped if Nova carried some weight.

14 Q1 wins is pretty good considering only 11 teams.

I think Nova will get it going and probably win the league like always.

But this team just isn’t as lethal. And at somepoint needs to earn the ranking they keep receiving
