Changing oil

Not any more. Place i buy tires from will rotate then for free with oil change.
My tire place does certs for free puncture fix and rotations anyway, so I would have no need for that. But if I did that would make sense.

I still do almost all of my own car maintenance.

Why pay twice as much and wait twice as long when I can just do it myself with minimal effort?

Was going to say that earlier. When I’ve bought new I’ve always gotten at least a few years of oil change thrown in with it.

Current cars were low mileage used with good deals (off leases and former rentals) and places didn’t even have a shop to offer free oil changes.
The humanity!!! fresh off lease (usually "certified pre-owned") and no dealership maintenance bays to do oil changes etc??

I haven't changed my own oil in 25 years at least. Time is money and it doesn't make any sense to waste 45 minutes of my life to save $5.

Off to Valvoline I go and I sit in my vehicle while they do the job and I drive out 10-15 minutes later.

When I was a kid I used to change my oil as well as my grand dad's tractor and truck. He taught me how and had all the tools and the most important thing, a jack. But now, after buying a new car recently, it's part of the package that you get free oil changes for the term of the car loan.

Nope. Mine was off a lot that takes the off leases the dealership won’t or can’t certify pre own. Yep, that means most of them have need to have body work done, frame might be bent, etc. Its a real needle in a haystack pain in the ass to find an good one. But they give you the CarFax on all of them for free on the website. You just have to know what you’re looking for.

It’s just a dealer as a clearinghouse. No service. But a damn good deal. I got a Jetta with just short of 15K miles for nearly $3k off of blue book. Yep, it had a accident. Rear bumper and quarter panel had to be replaced. No frame issue, just body work. But apparently that took it out of VW being able to certify it.

The Mrs and both girls cars were former rentals. Low miles, still had gobs of warranty. Buy direct form Hertz....they just want to get rid of them.

that is usually how i used to buy my vehicles got a kick ass highway miles only van that way for dirt cheap

I change the oil on my toys, my lawnmower and my old 84 F-250.

I pay someone to do it on my daily driver F-150. By the time you buy the oil and the filter, it's not much cheaper, and I trust the guy I take it to. Plus it comes with a free tire rotation.

Only reason I change it on my old truck is because I don't drive the truck much, and it's super easy to get the filter off and on. No risk of busting knuckles or cussing up a storm.

Used to change the oil in my '89 5.0 and '96 Cobra, because I didn't trust anyone else. Especially with larger oil reservoirs and needing to change the oil in the supercharger as well. Had magnetic drain plugs and always inspected the oil for signs of internal damage under N2O ('89) or boost ('96). Changed spark plugs often and just routine maintenance inspections on a regular basis.

Still take care of the small engines myself, but I let someone else change the oil in my truck and wife's van now.

I do mostly all the routine maintenance on my truck...brakes, oil, etc.

It's easy and I enjoy it.

I look down on those who don't change their own oil.

went to change the oil in my wifes audi and there was no drain plug....i aint spending $100 on some tool to pump it out. it can go to the quik lube

lol

I don't look down on them, but I do think it's funny that supposed "tough guy alphas" are afraid to change their own oil.

They must not want to break a nail.

It has absolutely nothing to do with me not trusting the mechanic...it's just such a simple task, it's just easier for me to do it myself. Making an appointment and waiting for it to get done is more a pain in the ass than just doing the job.

Fucking Germans ...

So you couldn't find the drain plug?

Which guy said that they were "afraid" to do it?
