Coaching Carousel Scorecard This Season

From a pure financial standpoint, do the Big 12 ADs really think they will be able to keep up in the "Coaching Salary Arms Race" once OU and Texas leave? If I'm an AD from another P5 conference with a job opening, I'm selling future financial reduction possibilities for their current schools to Aranda, Campbell, Gundy, and Kleiman. Those four are pretty good coaches to remain at places that may be forced to pay less for both HCs and their assistants. What am I missing?

ahh yes the "strong relationships with hsfb coaches".. Napier can be better than whomever lands at LSU.. but these high school coaches will still be sending the state's best players to Baton Rouge, not FL.

Not sure but I bet those schools put more money into the programs because they have no choice. Think a lot of them just been getting fat the past decade.. Also.. I don't think the Big12 is in a bad spot even when the UT/ou leave. They still have a better brand of football than the Pac12 does.

Wonder who SC finally gets, because that conference depends on them. Oregon is cool and all, but they don't move the needle and cannot carry that conference the way SC does.

Seeing how these BiG schools are shelling out money on coaches that are ok is something. I can see why Mel and Franklin are taking the extensions.. it's a ton of money, and most likely more than SC probably wants to pay.. and at a place where the expectations aren't as high.

SC has to get the right guy, forget the instant grades or reactions.. they gotta make sure they get the guy who can position them to recruit the way they should and be Conf champs by season 3.

i live in Washington and I made a comment to a coworker when discussing the job opening that now UW is like the 4th best available job and he argued that it was a better job than Florida.

takes?

Your coworker is an idiot and you should distance yourself from him/her

I don't see any way the remaining Big 12 schools will have the revenue to pay their coaches the type money Michigan State is going to pay Mel. They'd have to sell the farm and gut the total athletic program entirely....unless BMDs are willing to significantly up their ante.

You are right and he lives in a low rent dream world if he thinks so.

Chip is safe. UCLA is a state school, so their AD can't just fire/hire a coach. There's a whole process they have to go through and have to get approval beyond the President of the university. They also have to get approval beyond the President on salary which limits what they can pay.

USC's AD only needs the approval of the President of the university to hire/fire a coach and he just needs booster(s) willing to write the checks to determine the salary.
This.

Plus, Chip and the Bruins beat the Trojans.....

Interestingly, either this season or next is the final year of his contract and I'm seeing some of the writers saying that he should be fired anyway.

USC's coaching search has gone pretty quiet...not sure what's going on. Some seem to think Fickell, some say Franklin (although that seems to have cooled of late) some say the dude at Iowa State...Cowherd said he has sources at USC that he trusts, but says he isn't buying what they're saying and went on to say they should go after someone like Raheem Morris (which I wouldn't hate).

I like what Chip has done, especially this season.....

USC has to nail the next coaching hire.....big time.

“Better” is subjective. If it means lower expectations and salary, then your friend is right. Is he a lazy worker?

his friend is dumb, but are Florida and Washington going to go after the same coaches? I think the USC opening is a bigger obstacle for UW than Florida

and i'd take Florida over both USC and UW

Franklin just got a 10 year/$7.5 million extension at Pemm Stake.

Yeah, I don't get why folks are calling for Chips head. The improvement each season is fairly obvious. It was never going to be a 1 or 2 season rebuild. He's remaking the team from the ground up. He's been trying to get "his guys" recruited and install his system without screwing over the guys he inherited who may have NFL aspirations. It's a good 4-5 years to do all of that. And that's before you factor in Covid.

Yeah, USC needs to get this right and I'm sure Bohn knows it. I like that he's from outside USC...it should keep him from feeling like has to hire an "SC guy".

I find this "better job" nonsense hilarious. It seems like most of the time a "better job" is considered a "better job" because the team is winning...which typically means they've already got their coach in place. lol

Watch...let Florida and USC start winning again and suddenly both will be "better jobs" again.

Aranda and Fickell both are about to get paid... SC just has to pick the right one

Meanwhile Karl Dorrell has landed another gig at Colorado......LOL.
