I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to convince my wife that people outside of the Toyota dealership, can work on Toyotas. She has been taking her Sequoia there for fucking overpriced oil changes for over a decade. Whatever. I'll pay a little extra for her piece of mind.

So we were coming back from Utah, and the steering started getting kind of fucky, and was hard to turn left in spots, sporadically. I knew it wasnt right, and called a couple shops, and made an appt to go see a guy. She decided to take it to the dealership, and had my son take her to work. Tells me after its already there. "I told them to just go through it, and tell me what it needs". I was ready for the worst.

I wasn't even close to where the worst was. These cocksuckers call her, and tell her its going to be over $11,000! She goes into hysterics, and started blabbering about buying a new car, and its not worth keeping, and BLAHbiddy Blah Blah Blah!

I didnt even call the dealership, I just went down there and picked it up. Took it a mile up the road, where I had the appt set up with the original guy I called. He was the only mechanic I called that answered his phone, and had all 5 star reviews. I told him about picking it up from the dealership, and they wanted crazy money to fix it. He nods in obvious agreement, cause you know, everyone fucking knows they're crooks.

He calls me with a quote in about 3 hours, and with everything on the entire front end replaced : Rack and pinion, struts/shocks, power steering lines, grommets/bushings, upper and lower control arms, etc. Everything! $3600.00.

This SUV has 240k miles, and this is the first real chunk of change I ever put into it. I still drive it up to and on top of the mountains in Utah, and have done the brakes, and changed fluids. Had to charge the A/C once.

I just could not believe those assholes at the Toyota though. Eleven thousand dollars is 7k more, than what he did it for. For what? So the service dept can make as much as the retail side? I would imagine those assholes rake in at least as much on the shop end, if idiots are dumb enough to pay for it. Not me, and I think even the wife is now pissed enough to stop wasting money there. She'll waste it somewhere else I'm sure.

I cant be the only one that has been handed a ridiculous quote from a dealership.

I only go to the dealership for them to do maintenance because I lease and it's covered. Otherwise, it's always wise to have a mechanic you trust in your contacts. The dealership is full of crooks... they did try to screw me over last year because they said I took too long to bring the car in for an oil change. Threw that back in their faces and reminded them that they said they were pushing it out because i had such low mileage (thanks, covid), but I was still shocked/not shocked they tried to pull a fast one and were going to attempt to charge me for an oil change... which is something near $200 for the same job at half the price at a regular mechanic.

Well, of course. They had a woman bring a car with 240k in needing maintenance. Classic tactic. Pad the fuck out of it.

You explained she called blabbering about needing to buy a new car? I’m imagining they gave her the quote and the pitch to get out of this old car and into a new one. “Its a Toyota, of course it got you this far. But, repairs like this are only going to keep coming now. It’s time to think about a new car”.

That the damn thing about dealerships. I hate to back down and take one of my VWs in. Now I get a call once a week from a sales manager. Turns out they are having inventory issues and want to buy one of my cars. So that’s the pitch du jour now. Clever.

who did you use?

Because I have never spent anything on it before, and its one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. 3400 is less than having car payments
You're bound to start getting even bigger bills. Cars have a lifespan. And unless your SUV is some sort of classic, I don't see why it would be worth that much. I bet that's more money than the KBB value right now.

My F-150 has just short of 260K on it and it would take a lot more than 3 grand to buy it.
