Dealerships are the fucking worst!

They don't know what a "rack and pinion" is to begin with! Couple teeth probably broke off the "rack" or the "pinion" and is causing it to hang up on the broken tooth as it passes it. That it happens when you turn left makes me suspect the missing tooth is on the rack on the side the pinion travels when turning left.

Probably broke the tooth while turning left and hit a pothole or curb too hard.

It is a pain to change them...and if you have to remove tie-rod ends you may want to give them a good look to see if they need replacing. Check the idler arm too for movement. Just grab the steering parts after you lift the vehicle and have on jack stands and see if you can move the steering components to see if any slop in the joints and tie rod ends. If any show slop or movement you probably should replace them after 140k miles.
I knew it needed shocks and struts. I can look at the list again, but it's lengthy. For what they did, I got a decent deal. If I had a lift, I might have attempted it, but I don't, so fuck that.

I took my 93 Honda Accord in for it's 36K service to the local dealership. Guy comes out with a clipboard and states it will cost $672.00. I look at hi and say what the hell are you doing that an oil change and inspection costs so much. He states that they need to adjust the valves as [art of the service when A told him it's not listed in the manuel he came back with "well Honda doesn't put everything needed in the manuel because it might scare off buyers. I just laughed and too the car to my guy. I ask him what they will be doing and he just states what ever the manual calls for. $79.98 out the door

its a not so well kept secret that the service writers get big commissions for selling jobs. I knew a guy who was a service writer at Ford/Lincoln place. He was GREAT! I would take my car in for routine service and he had tons of other stuff done to it (all legit IMO) but always covered by warranty. In fact, one time I brought my car in just before the warranty was set to expire and he had a whole laundry list of things that needed to be done before the warranty expired. He got them all approved under warranty.

one day I get a text from him telling me that he was moving to a different dealership pretty far away. I called him to ask why and he told me that the owner of the dealership was cutting his pay by reducing the commission he was getting on jobs. He went to another dealership who matched his old offer. They knew the value of a good service writer and what it meant to the bottom line.

Dealerships don’t make money selling cars. They make money servicing them.

I just got rid of the Honda but the closest Honda dealer to me is fucking WORTHLESS. They completely missed two locked up rear shocks, told me is was "normal" when I knew it wasn't. Took it to another place and the lead mechanic nearly shit his pants on the test drive when the back end walked out from under us. He took it back and replaced all four shocks for the hassle and it only had about 15k miles on it.
Well when I had a recall I took it to Shitty Honda's of Lewisville and told them don't touch a damn thing on the car except what they needed for the recall. No 100 point inspection or anything, I don't like you all is what I told them. Some slapdick calls me a few hours later with the report of what it needs from the complimentary inspection. I about lost my shit. I went back, found the GM who had caught my wrath when they missed the locked out shocks the first time and read that dude there riot act. I told him the car was perfect when it came in, it better still be perfect. I didn't even get off the lot when I hit the brakes and felt a wobble. Went back in and told him to get the mechanics to pull the wheels off that they clearly over-torqued and turn my rotors to spec. Sure enough one of the front wheels they couldn't even break loose with their impact, had to keep at it until it finally went. They ended up putting new rotors on and I told the GM that is exactly why I told them not to touch my car. Every person up there is an incompetent fuckwad, and he's the worst for hiring them. To his credit he stood there and took it, in front of customers and everyone. God I hate that place. There is one good Honda dealer not near me and one good Nissan dealer near me. The rest can suck it.

If I did what you did, I would have been arrested or worse.

I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to convince my wife that people outside of the Toyota dealership, can work on Toyotas. She has been taking her Sequoia there for fucking overpriced oil changes for over a decade. Whatever. I'll pay a little extra for her piece of mind.

So we were coming back from Utah, and the steering started getting kind of fucky, and was hard to turn left in spots, sporadically. I knew it wasnt right, and called a couple shops, and made an appt to go see a guy. She decided to take it to the dealership, and had my son take her to work. Tells me after its already there. "I told them to just go through it, and tell me what it needs". I was ready for the worst.

I wasn't even close to where the worst was. These cocksuckers call her, and tell her its going to be over $11,000! She goes into hysterics, and started blabbering about buying a new car, and its not worth keeping, and BLAHbiddy Blah Blah Blah!

I didnt even call the dealership, I just went down there and picked it up. Took it a mile up the road, where I had the appt set up with the original guy I called. He was the only mechanic I called that answered his phone, and had all 5 star reviews. I told him about picking it up from the dealership, and they wanted crazy money to fix it. He nods in obvious agreement, cause you know, everyone fucking knows they're crooks.

He calls me with a quote in about 3 hours, and with everything on the entire front end replaced : Rack and pinion, struts/shocks, power steering lines, grommets/bushings, upper and lower control arms, etc. Everything! $3600.00.

This SUV has 240k miles, and this is the first real chunk of change I ever put into it. I still drive it up to and on top of the mountains in Utah, and have done the brakes, and changed fluids. Had to charge the A/C once.

I just could not believe those assholes at the Toyota though. Eleven thousand dollars is 7k more, than what he did it for. For what? So the service dept can make as much as the retail side? I would imagine those assholes rake in at least as much on the shop end, if idiots are dumb enough to pay for it. Not me, and I think even the wife is now pissed enough to stop wasting money there. She'll waste it somewhere else I'm sure.

I cant be the only one that has been handed a ridiculous quote from a dealership.
Reminds me of a story my boss told me recently. They were leaking oil so they take it in and are told it is the oil and pan and the oil filter is cracked. Thing is that they just changed the oil. I told her that they are responsible to fix it since they just did the oil change and no more than a few days you are leaking oil and your oil filter is cracked. The dealership told her that those parts were already cracked. I told my boss 'so the fuck what', if they weren't leaking before hand, then it is on them. I had one try to do something similar to me. I was getting my oil changed and they were vacuuming the inside of the car and somehow broke my steering column. They came up to me and tried to say that it was already cracked. I told them, I don't give a fuck and good luck trying to prove it was cracked before hand. They went inside and came back out with a number for me to get it fixed for free. Damn right.

My boss ended up shelling out $1700. Unreal for an oil pan and an oil filter, you're talking both parts costing like $50 or less and they charged my boss that amount.

I've had my Gladiator for almost 2 years. I've washed it once at a Mobil station and changed the oil once for $90 at a Valvoline quickie. It costs $290 leased through my biz and I write that shit off. In a year, I'll give it back and get sumpin else.

Either I'm driving a classic I restored...or Idgaf. Those working class mofos I see driving customized trucks n shit make me laugh. Working for 2 months to put big wheels on a POS is idiotic.

Also, if you're good with tools, you should consider seeing if you can do the maintenance yourself. Youtube actually has some really good vids for basically any kind of replacement. You'll be surprised at how much you can actually do yourself with just a decent tool set.

Don't even really have to be all that great with tools with those Youtube videos. I have an older, high mileage car that I really like (plus I hate car payments) so I found a decent toolkit for a good price...between that and the Youtube videos, there isn't much I can't do myself.

Prior to that, about the only thing I would do myself was an oil change.

I totaled my car once and they fixed it for free. We don’t play that shit in Southlake.
Big Wheels don't count.

Why would you get a totaled car fixed? Now you’ll have the dreaded “salvage” title. Did you not have insurance? Southlake doesn’t sound very bright.

Me and mechanic type tools do NOT...... REPEAT...... DO NOT get along well together!!! :rolleyes2:

I am OKAY with that these days, though.

I do not use dealership service centers for parts or service except for covered warranty repairs and recalls. I research nearby AAA rated quality shops with good reputations for other repairs. For parts I order OEM online and have the local shops install.

Looking into Carshield car service deals. Anyone use Carshield?

So if it were totaled, then you have a salvaged title car?

When I bought my wife’s Lexus last year, during the shut down of covid, I made them throw in oil change for 5 years and give me a 7 year 100,000 mile warranty. It’s a good peace of mind
