DIY Home/auto Repairs/maintenance

They make these brackets that expand between the trusses/joists, then yoiu just screw the light box to it, and mount the fan.
But would you hang a fan from it? Have you in the past? I know what you’re talking about and have used them for light fixtures, but I’ve never hung a fan from them. I Don’t trust it!

Yeah, it seems like my copper sweating jobs are always wear the water will not completely shut off and it’s overhead. Nothing like some hot solder on your shoulder blade
Fuck sweating copper anymore. I will “shark bite” just about anything these days.

I've hung fans from some pretty sketchy outlet boxes before. Using those old-construction spanner boxes seems relatively safe to me. Fans aren't really that heavy and unless they get way out of balance won't be much wear on a box. If you can get to that space via the attic that's obviously best, but in a case of a 1st floor situation or something then yeah I'd trust that device Pete posted.

If you do it right, YOU can hang from it. I wasnt sure the first time, until I literally put all my weight on it and it held no problem.

On the ceiling fan topic... Most all of those fan boxes work great. I've also used scab piece (2x4 or 2x6) of wood & screw it into the existing ceiling joist (when you can access the attic above the ceiling fan room) & have been able to use a ceiling fan box like this.

Yeah, toe nailing in a cross brace then something like that for old construction works. The one Pete posted I have only used when I didn't have attic access.

I have used them when I just flat didnt want to get in the fucking attic. Attics out here can get above 140 degrees.

Those are good too, but sometimes if you really need the fixture centered, they just wont work.

Something I forgot to add, when installing these brackets, there are claws on either side that dig into the framing above. It you have a small crescent wrench, you can really torque the crack on them, and drive those claws into the wood. Just be careful not to go too far, and start popping screw/nail heads in the drywall in the ceiling. I usually crank on them until I hear a little cracking noise, and then stop.

I have picture somewhere of me literally hanging from one before mounting the light box.

Same, had to replace my A/C capacitor 2 seasons ago. Luckily a found a replacement at a Ferguson’s that was open a bit on Saturday. Shit like that always breaks on a Friday evening to try fucking you till Monday.

I figure if I have to get above the ceiling anyway, I may as well just put in a trusty 2’ long 2x4?

“Hire a guy”?
Yes. That’s my go to strategy. At the end of the day, it’s faster gets done better and isn’t any more expensive (particularly if factor in the cost of things you fuck up trying to do shit yourself).

Same. Had to drive an hour to a Grangers that was open. So I got on Amazon and ordered a spare, sitting in my toolbox right now. My wife always gives me crap for stuff like that, my grandfather was REALLY bad about buying stuff "just in case", but every time something breaks and I have the part to fix it right then instead of being without...I win :)
