Jim Harbaugh gone to NFL

If they offered him the job, he was out your door. He is only at Michigan because he didn't have another option but to quit.
Harbaugh should be thankful he didn't get the job with the Vikings.

Maybe. We'll never know. I think the only difference is that Harbaugh, because he actually does like and respect Michigan, was being incredibly open about a process that typically plays in secret behind the scenes. Did Mel Tucker get an offer from LSU before MSU bumped his salary? Did he have interviews? Something happened that made MSU make him one of the highest coaches in CFB. The difference is that he did it all in secret. And had he left, it would have been no different than Brian Kelly bouncing in the middle of the night. I kind of respect how open this has all been.

How little self-respect does a program like Michigan have to let their coach treat them this way?
You can't really be upset. The pinnacle of coaching is the NFL. And winning a super bowl is the pinnacle of the sport of football. It sucks to have a coach who has the opportunity to make the jump, so it will always be there, but it is what it is.

I also think this will be a common theme for him contrary to what he has said. Michigan is only going to fall further behind the elite programs with archaic rules the admission department use at UM. Michigan needs to get the stick out of their ass or they will continue to be an afterthought nationally if they don't join the trends with the transfer portal and NIL deals.

Depends. Maybe Tucker told the MSU administration he was being considered and they headed it off at the pass (how crazy is that contract, btw?). From all accounts from insiders at UM, Harbaugh thought he had the job because of his relationship with the new GM at Minnesota.

I haven't really seen a coach act like Harbaugh in this type of situation although I guess I should not be surprised.

I hope if Ryan Day pulls this crap they just tell him to get out of Columbus whether he has another job or not.

The point being, most of the time this stuff happens in secret. Two huge examples just this year. Riley jumping to USC and Kelly jumping to LSU. No hint of that at all until like the hours before it happened. That means interviews took place in secret, recruits weren't told, players weren't told, staff didn't know...ect. The ND administration was caught entirely off guard.

Why does Michigan tolerate Harbaugh's antics?

What antics? Obviously Jim is a weird dude who says and does weird things sometimes but those are usually directed elsewhere. We basically gave him control of the athletic department and he just won a big ten title. He wants full control, that's his "antics", and he has it here.

BREAKING: Vikings had an offer put together for 12 million a year. Harbs took a lunch break, and decided to decline the job.

I’ll go ahead and assume he will now be getting at least 12 Lee at MI.

It's usually done in secret because people in the program realize that if it doesn't work out, they are stuck with a coach who doesn't want to be there.

Maybe the Vikings can rehire Bud Grant. Even at 94 he'd be their best HC since 1985.

I'm glad to see Harbaugh stay at Michigan. Harbaugh is good for college football. College football needs personalities to add to the intrigue and he is that.

He got off to a rough start with rivals and big games but finally beat his nemesis last season. I'm not sold on Day being what Tressel and Urbs were to tOSU so it's possible for Harbaugh to make that series more competitive going forward.
Tom Osborne was criticized much the same as Harbaugh. It took T.O. six tries to finally beat Oklahoma and Nebraska was a different program after that. It was momentum.
Not saying Harbaugh will end up winning NC's but I'm glad to be able to watch.

I used to compare Harbaugh to Bo Pelini because their records were basically the same. 9 wins/10 wins, lose the big ones. Pelini at least had division titles so I gave him the edge. Harbaugh surpassed Pelini by winning a conference championship so I won't be going there anymore.

Mel Tucker will be interesting to watch now that it seems he's finally settled into one spot.
I don't see James Franklin giving Harbaugh trouble on the regular.
The West division doesn't have the programs or the coaches to give Harbaugh trouble on the regular.

Let's play football!!

I don’t think Harbaugh doesn’t want to be here. I think Harbaugh had, maybe will still have, lingering feelings to want to win a super bowl. I don’t think that has anything to do with his feelings about the Michigan job. You can’t win a super bowl while being a college coach.

Whatever you have to tell yourself, I guess.

Now you hold up just a damn minute! @Wamu never, ever gets his facts mixed up when discussing Ohio State or Michigan football. :nono:

JH was supposed to return to ann arbor and restore the glory from day one.

Seven years last all he has to show for it is a lousy record vs. ranked teams. One division title. One conference crown.

A 1-5 bowl record.

A 1-5 record vs. Ohio State & he refused to play the Buckeyes in 2020.

I'm not talking any trash about him. These are his coaching numbers.

Michigan should get a bump in 2023 recruiting.
Harbaugh finally has something to sell to recruits and their parents (division and conference championship) where other coaches won't be able to bash him as much like they surely have been in the past.

But the “he’s just waiting for the right NFL job” will be a valid knock on him.

You left out where he OWNS that bum Ryan Day

That's always a good bash on a coach. "Will he be there through your 4 years?"

It's the easiest bash on Frost right now. Even above his (4-8) and (3-9) seasons.

So you think Harbaugh should have lied to recruits and their parents about it? I commend him for being open and honest, as he had to know it was going to upset many fans (like myself, i think UM should be looking for replacements as we speak).

Should he have been like the RB coach at OSU who recruited Mike Weber, who left the day after he signed his letter of intent, to go the Bears? Or like Saban who told MSU players right before their bowl game he wasn't going anywhere and then left in the middle of the night to take the LSU job?

Maybe it looked odd because most coaches would lie about the situation? Personally, I still hate it and think UM should look elsewhere for a coach after the 2022 season, but I'm guessing the players and recruits respect him for being open about the situation,.

I think you mean looking for any NFL team who will take him as HC. I think if Minnesota had offered him the job, he would be gone. Unless UM offers a ridiculous contract like MSU did to Tucker -- he will simply be coaching UM until he gets an offer.
