Let's Talk About This 12 Team Playoff Deal...

I just don't get it. If FCS players can handle a 24 team playoff and DIII players can handle a 32 team playoff, why can't G5 players handle a 12 team one? And here is something to gnaw on...........
They had some games in the first round that weren't close and it didn't stop the playoffs one damn bit.

Doesn't matter about players handling it.

Differences between D1 and D2/D3 are significant. At best in D1, there are at most 8 teams that have a legitimate shot at the championship. Much of the time, it's less than 8. I think 3 playoff games is enough for D1 and no one should be getting byes.

right that was my point. G5 4 teams 3 games and im sure they would get a solid payout. but any more and its probably costing more to put on than what they realistically would get
I'm not sure the networks would even be willing to pay as much for a four team G5 playoff as the share they are currently getting from the CFP. From what I understand, the P5s have been willing to keep the G5 share high enough to keep them from their own playoff. It seems the lower level P5 guys don't want the G5s going off on their own. @Wizardhawk knows more about the workings of all of this than I do. He's explained it to me more than once but I'm slow on the intake.

I can buy this part...but it is probably even less than 8.

But the rhetoric about FBS players not being able to handle the additional games is a bunch of shit IMO. Hell, in Texas high school football the 24 teams that will gather up at Jerry's world in a couple of weeks will be playing their 16th games of their season. And they are mostly 16-18 year olds.

The Post Season is typically kind of a joke for College Football because there are a lot of teams with players that opt-out or just don't play hard because they are waiting to get to the next level. Also a lot of teams use these games to test out players for the next season and development so there really isn't the effort put into bowl games sometimes. Playoffs are obviously the exception because you have something to play for. Expanding playoffs will get rid of meaningless bowl games and create more meaningful post season matchups.

and your 22-23 G5 4, and 12 team tournys would look like:

1. 11-2 Troy vs 4. 8-5 Toledo
2. 11-2 UTSA vs 3. 9-4 Fresno State

or
1. 11-2 Troy vs 8. 9-4 Ohio 2nd vs 9. 9-3 Cinici
2. 11-2 UTSA vs7. 9-4 Boise State 2nd vs 10. 8-3 James Madison
3. 9-4 Fresno vs 6. 9-4 UCF 2nd vs 11. 9-3 Coastal Carolina
4. 8-5 Toledo vs 5. 10-2 South Alabama vs 12. 8-5 W Kentucky

i had a hard time with Troy vs UTSA at the 1 and 2.
I included James Madison because they won their division but were transitioning to FBS so couldnt play for the title.

One thought with going to 12-team playoff: Is there any reason to even keep the Conference Championship Games? It is highly likely you will get rematches every year in the playoffs with these same teams.

Auto bid for division champs/top 2 teams. CCG becomes 1st round

Highly likely? I'm sure they will seed to avoid it. You have chances of knocking out the losing teams as well which means more than 12 play in the postseason process.

For example, it's the top 6 conf champs. That makes it a play in game for the top G5 and weakest P5. There will be real drama on several CCG.

It isn't just about the SEC or B1G.

it still gives some teams a chance to play themselves in. LSU for example.

while we play this game of hypotheticals the 12 team passed we will be seeing it but for shits and giggles lets see what an 8 would have looked like this year.
straight ranking

1UGA vs 8Utah
4Ohio State vs 5Alabama
3TCU vs 6Tennessee
2Michigan vs 7Clemson

with the top 6 champs and next 2 highest ranked
1UGA vs 8Tulane
4 Ohio State vs 5 Clemson
3 TCU vs 6 Utah
2Michigan vs 7 Kansas State

and 16
1 UGA vs 16 Tulane
8 Utah vs 9 Kansas State

5 Alabama vs 12 Washington
4 Ohio State vs 13 Florida State

6 Tennessee vs 11 Penn State
3 TCU vs 14 Oregon State

7 Clemson vs 10 USC
2 Michigan vs 15 Oregon

This is why you have to have byes. tOSU, Bama, and UTjr all would have had byes and gained an advantage by not being in a CCG. Can’t have that disincentive to win your conference.

7 Clemson vs 10 USC
2 Michigan vs 15 Oregon
This magnifies the problem. 12 with byes is the perfect balance

This year two teams played their way into the CFP byes … KSU and Utah. LSU and UNC would have been knocked out. CCGs aren’t going anywhere.

would it be an advantage? the games are weeks later after the CCG

one more hypothetical is people talking (few people) making it like FCS or March madness with all champions. 10.

so 1 and 2 bye

4 Utah vs 5 Kansas State
(8 UTSA vs 9 Fresno State) vs 1 UGA
(7 Troy vs 10 Toledo) vs 2 Michigan
3 Clemson vs 6 Tulane

they are anywhere from 10-14 days later for the first round, so hell yeah, it's an advantage. The first round has to be 10 days to 2 weeks after the CCW.

Not to even mention that it takes away an incentive to win your conference which makes games more important.

It's crazy that people don't realize the genius that went into the 12 team CFP. They just say, I don't like byes, or I don't like 12 for whatever. There are so many layers to the 12 when it comes to incentives, etc.

That is so totally gross I don't even have the words.
