Lincoln Riley to USC

True. But leaving ANY of the "pinnacle tier CFB" schools voluntarily is a snub no matter how someone tries to spin it. It is very, very rare.

That said, I'm not so sure Riley didn't receive some "quasi ultimateums" during the year sometime. We may never know but it sure looked like something was going on. That or they just really weren't that good this year.
I'll chime in here for what it's worth. There were no ultimatums I ever heard mentioned by anyone either privately or officially. What I was hearing were frequent complaints about Grinch and Bedenbaugh. Grinch couldn't coach the team to tackle for some reason and the soft coverages were just more of the same-old, same-old. At times the D would shine brightly and then suddenly go cold. It was hot/cold and it was hard to understand; that's what the complaints were about. As for Bedenbaugh, he bragged before the season that this year's offensive line was the best he'd ever seen. However, they proved to be fat, slow and prone to stupid penalties game after game after game against mediocre competition that a lot of people were fearful was a portent of serious problems in the SEC. People were questioning if Bedenbaugh would be as good against better competition as they knew we would need to be. The main knock on Lincoln Riley was "he's too soft". Fair or not that was the main complaint. But, again, I never heard about any "ultimatums" and I commiserate with quite a few people about OU sports.

Was Riley "talked to" about Grinch and Bedenbaugh? From the games I saw OU play, (which wasn't all of them but 5-6), I would have to say that criticism you referenced was warranted and not just carping.

Yeah, can't say for sure this is what happened, but even the best teams have the occasional "down year", especially with guys able to go to the NFL early and use the transfer portal if they feel like they aren't playing enough. According to reports, this was shaping up to be a potential #1 class for OU...those kinds of classes usually happen because a team lost a lot of top talent.

So, while it may have looked like a something was wrong, it may simply be that it was a down year. They also had to bench their Heisman candidate QB because he wasn't playing like a Heisman candidate QB.

Maybe the issue was with Riley? Maybe it was just the inevitable "down year" where guys just didn't play as well? My guess is that it was a little of both.

One loss would qualify as "pretty much perfect"...no losses would be perfect.

What are the chances that a 2 loss, non-Conference Champion team gets into the cfp from the PAC?

What if it's a 1 loss PAC Champ vs. a 1 loss SEC or even B1G team?
When has a 2 loss team from any conference made the playoffs?

bama who edged out wins over 6-6 Florida, 6-6 LSU with 6 rushing yards, a solid Arkansas team and multiple overtimes with 6-6 Auburn and a loss to a decent A&M?
favored? yes. heavy? not so sure.
They’re only 6.5 point dogs to UGA, they’re TD favorites minimum over any Pac team

I heard that it's been like 94 games in a row that Alabama has been favored, until now
UGA was actually the favorite in 2015, but Bama opened up a 55 gallon drum of whoop ass. Wonder if that was the last time?

so what you are saying is being favored doesnt mean winning

I don't know how many people did or didn't talk to Riley about all of this. But there were certainly umpteen conversations among the fans/donors. I suspect it had filtered to Riley and he didn't appreciate it. Dude does have thin skin unlike Bob Stoops who didn't give a fat F what people thought most of the time (like the situation with his dip shit brother's defensive coaching). Either personality can be a weakness at times but guys like Saban, Stoops, David Shaw, etc. are at least steady hands.

No, but it means it’s an upset when the favored team doesn’t which is why I didn’t say Bama would beat every Pac team, just that they would be heavy favorites

what were the lines against Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, Texas A&M and LSU?
what was the Oregon Ohio State line?
oregon utah?
LSU UCLA?

I don’t know. You’ve got a Google box like the rest of us. You think I memorize weeks old betting lines?

Wasn't Georgia 10-2 in 2018?
11-2, and didn’t make the playoffs.

Auburn would have in 2017 at 11-2 had they won the SECCG, but that’s because one of their losses was Clemson and they beat Bama and would have beaten UGA twice. UGA was 12-1 the only year they made the playoffs

USC (or any other CFB team) ain't got a monopoly on that. 2017 Syracuse over Clemson  , 2018 Purdue over Ohio State .

I'm sure there are more than those but that is what comes to my mind right now.
Bama had two losses to Ole Miss in. 2015 and 2016, aTm this year.

Oh, I see my mistake. I looked at their 2018 record and applied it to their 2018 playoff appearance instead of the 2017 record. :L

I know there's a possibility that it could happen this year and it happened in the BCS.

This year is the best possibility, but the committee has shown that they’re against 2 loss teams. Penn State had 2 losses and won the B1G, but Ohio State made it over them despite losing H2H against them and losing the division to them. And OSU won the B1G with 2 losses in 2017, but a one loss non division winner Bama was taken over them

Really because there have been how many undefeated teams from the SEC make it vs undefeated teams from the Pac? it is difficult to do no matter what conference for different reasons in each.
Irrelevant. Stop trying to pass off PAC as being as difficult as SEC. Nobody is buying it.
