Mars rover lands this week

The rover, launched July 30, 2020, will land in Jezebel Crater on Mars 3:55 p.m Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021, after seven months of travel. Strapped to the rover's belly is the Mars Helicopter, Ingenuity, for testing the first powered flight on the Red Planet.

That’s pretty cool stuff. And the 7 month travel doesn’t seem bad. Smart for all these missions to take off last summer when both planets were so damn close.

Past Mars landing sites. Only Curiosity is still active. It landed in Gale Crater, August, 2012. Perseverance is about 2,300 miles away. Diameter of Mars is 4,200 miles.

Theoretically if it lands I think we're supposed to get actual video of the landing on this one. The cameras on this new drone should be just awesome compared to the drone that landed in 2012. I'm pretty excited to get some HD images of Mars.

That's so fucking far away.

around 20 minutes, watching live

This is stressful, the silence in the NASA room is anxiety producing

It’s always great to see the relief of all that anxiety for the control room folks. So much effort and money riding on landing that.

Well done JPL!!

I saw the first photo from the nav camera....can’t wait to see the higher resolution shots later today.

That's what I'm really looking forward to. Supposedly there should be video of the landing as well.
