If he clears waivers J.D. Davis should fire his agent. I would fire him either way, you just can't whiff on a detail like this when it's your job.

If Davis had not gone to arbitration and had signed the Giants' offer his salary would be guaranteed and they would not be able to waive him so cheaply. He basically gave that guarantee up for a chance at an extra $350K in arbitration. Even if some of the blame/fault should fall on Davis I have trouble seeing a scenario where his agent didn't also drop the ball here.
That arbitration hearing got my attention at the time. They were quibbling over less than 5% the value of the deal. That just didn’t make sense.

There are rumblings that Davis may file a grievance since the clause is supposed to be used for underperforming players. But Davis is raking this spring, so it would be hard to defend he is “getting fired with cause”.

This is certainly an interesting story, still developing.

a shame his career abruptly ended. amazing pitcher

at least Logan Webb has taken the mantle as the next great sinker throwing Webb

Would the Padres just stop trying to make Tyler Wade a thing? He stinks and has fucking stunk for years!

he's still in the majors?

I'd still take him over Yuniesky Betancourt. I'll never understand how he got over 4000 plate appearances. -6.5 WAR from 2008-13

They sent down Eguy and kept him! At least he's not starting anymore with Arraez on board.

I prefer Betancourt, he could at least handle SS.

D-Backs pitching has been disappointing this year, but the lineup has been quite good. Corbin Carroll's finally hitting (.252/.342/.598 since ASB) and the whole team is mashing (.278/.353/.500, 196 runs in 31 games since ASB). Getting Kelly back is huge. If that rotation can figure things out they might be one of the most dangerous teams down the stretch. They're already 23-8 since the break with a +60 run differential. They do have a tough schedule remaining (4 vs LAD, 7 vs MIL, 3 each vs HOU/BOS/SD/NYM)

Getting Gabby back (I don't spell it "Gabi" and I don't know why everyone else does) will help, should help the pitching staff/run prevention as well.

Loved living through it. 3 trophies and 5 appearances in my lifetime ain’t so bad. Most fan bases can’t claim that level of success.

Okay, I see that the Padres clinched a wildcard spot. Could have taken the division at the end.

They had an awesome 2nd half to the season. 43-20 since the Break and the rotation looks really good

Despite falling short of the division, I kinda like them better than the Dodgers. LA's got the better lineup and a good bullpen, but I don't trust that rotation
