Ohio State out bid for 5 star recruit.........................

You don't have to engage. Here is the conversation to help you out.

Then you said to re-read it. So I did, which is where I got this quote FROM YOU.

You truly think these superstar 17 and 18 year old inner city kids who see football as their way out are turning down guaranteed NIL money so they can go be a part of "georgia's culture" and the possibility of getting some NIL deals if they earn it. It is tough to even type that out with a straight face.

It is your story though -- so more power to you. I will tell you right now, there isn't a chance in hell that is what is happening though.
First, nice paternalism ... as if all football recruits are poor inner-city kids. Some are poor, but many are solidly middle-class families.

Second, and this is where you can't read or understand what you read, I never said that they are only coming to UGA for the culture. Sheesh, read, for fuck sake. I said that those who are only out for NIL wouldn't get NIL from UGA just to come to UGA. This is the truth. So, if they are superstar 17 and 18-year-old inner-city kids, they won't play at UGA if they hold their hands for money to be recruited. We've lost some good recruits because of that, and our coaches appear to be okay with that. And there are a ton of kids who get this ... and this will be the way it will go in the next 5 years because boosters won't keep throwing away money to unproven talent when you can - in five years - show them what they can make when they come to your school, work hard, and earn it.

And finally, if you could comprehend what I posted, they are coming expecting NIL. Duh. I never said otherwise. But, they are expecting it because UGA provides it to those that are in the program and earn it. How could you not have understood what I wrote? You got your panties in a twist and stopped reading. Others have tried the "we will pay you to come here" without making them earn it. It hasn't worked very well, has it? ATM has 25 players in the portal.

I brought up culture because the reason UGA isn't giving out handouts coming in is because that fucks up the culture. It was obvious that was going to happen, and it did. UGA, and other similar programs, realize that it's talent and culture that wins NCs. So they will pass on some higher-rated recruits that come in with their hands out, because they don't want to fuck with the culture. Because not all the great recruits are poor inner-city kids like you patronizingly think they are, there are plenty that come in knowing they will get NIL when it's earned, get it when it's earned, and that enables us to have talent and culture.

I am not typing this again, so read and learn. And if you can't keep a straight face when you read this, you aren't keeping up with current events. Because that is what is being done at UGA and other winning programs.

Seeing as 70% of african american kids are born into single families households, with the vast majority being single mothers and the overwhelming majority of a blue chip recruits being african american -- I'd wager a lot of money most are from families well below middle class and are from families who live paycheck to paycheck -- it isn't difficult to make the leap. But hey -- maybe Georgia only recruits the middle class and well off elite recruits.

As far as the rest you typed -- it sounds like a great story and that you truly believe it. With all your inside info -- tell me about the recruits Georgia has passed on because they had their hand out and Georgia only runs an earn your NIL program. After that -- tell me how Georgia participated in the bag man era, yet now only give NIL to those who earn it? Or during the bag man era, was Georgia also telling recruits, if you sign with us, you have a chance for us to give you money, but only if you earn it?

Come on -- you can't possibly believe this. I'm not saying every kid has a list of demands for NIL, but if you are signing the type of kids Georgia has during the NIL era -- they are without question guaranteeing them deals.

Now you aren't just being paternalistic, but a racist POS. So all the CFB recruits are poor black kids? SMH, did you even stop and think about what you typed? Off the top of my head, I can name 25% of UGA's roster of black players whose parents do just fine and aren't living in poverty. I'd love to see you tell this to Kellee Ringo's mom, Milton's father who owns his own business, or Jalen Carter's parents who are middle class and leaders in their community. Big 0's mom working in a casino in Vegas so her son can play football - she'll be getting riches soon when he cashes in the NFL, and he did damn good with NIL the past few years so he would stay. I could go on and on, you paternalistic racist. Are there some poor kids? Sure, and perhaps those players might be more inclined to chase immediate money. But you can fuck off with the the idea that NIL is a bunch of poor black folks trying to get rich quick ... SMH.

Everything else you mention I have already explained if you could read and comprehend. You disagree fine. Now fuck off ... I am seriously losing IQ points just engaging with you.

Here's Smart on the role NIL plays at UGA. Listen and believe it or not. If you really think through it, and you look at ATM, what he says makes sense:

This should be common sense:

Nowhere did I say all. Majority? Yes. That's simply a fact. Stating facts doesn't make someone a racist.

Broken down by race, however, the statistics show stark differences. The percentage of White children under 18 who live with both parents almost doubles that of Black children, according to the data. While 74.3 percent of all White children below the age of 18 live with both parents, only 38.7 percent of African-American minors can say the same.

Instead, more than one-third of all Black children in the United States under the age of 18 live with unmarried mothers—compared to 6.5 percent of White children. The figures reflect a general trend: During the 1960-2016 period, the percentage of children living with only their mother nearly tripled from 8 to 23 percent and the percentage of children living with only their father increased from 1 to 4 percent.

But you can fuck off with the the idea that NIL is a bunch of poor black folks trying to get rich quick ... SMH.
Go to the top 50 recruits in nation in 2023 (if you'd like we could go to the top 100 or whatever you'd like) -- then tell me how many of those recruits are white kids. Then tell me how many of those recruits are white kids who aren't a QB. To speed this along -- I will give you help. There is exactly ONE recruit in the top 50 who is white and isn't a QB. So stop with your stupidity of trying to use the racist card, when it is simply facts being used.

I hate to defend a michigan fan, but holy hell man you are way off the mark here. First off, that's not what paternalism is. Secondly, he provided statistics. Just because they don't paint a great picture, it doesn't make him a racist. If you have differing statistics or disagree, you can have that conversation without jumping off the deep end.

Listen to you ... so black families are poor but the one white family in the top 50 isn't. You racist, patronizing POS. Seriously, stop and listen to you what you are saying. You are saying that all the black recruits are inner-city kids who are poor, but the one white kid isn't. You are making broad assumptions based on race.

Let me help you out a bit:

Justice Haynes is in the top 50. He's black. His parents are upper-middle-class in Atlanta.

If I had the time, I could go through those 50 and I guarantee you that a majority are not poor inner-city kids, and their parents are solidly middle class.

Just stop with this nonsense.

The better term would be patronizing racist, although paternalistic still fits IMO.

He hasn't shown any statistics to back up his claim that all or a majority of black recruits are in poverty, or poor black kids who will be prone to chase NIL money because their families need the money now. He threw out some random facts about single mother households, etc., none of which shows anything about these recruits. Those are his words and his point. If you can't see that he's making racist assumptions, that I am confident aren't true, I am not sure what to say.

Is it true that some black recruits have family that could use NIL now? Of course. But there are also a bunch of white kids whose families could use NIL money now. But to make a blanket statement about black recruits clearly shows a racist POV, IMO.

But, if I were inclined I could go down the list of UGA players, black and white, and show which ones have parents or a parent squarely in the middle class. You could do the same.

Better yet, just give us the number of top 100 players who families are beyond poor and can't afford food and shelter :noidea:

This last part, you very well may not be wrong on. I honestly don't know so I'm not going to say you're wrong.

He's not wrong about statistics that show how big an issue it is in the black community regarding single-parent households and how disproportionately this impacts the black community. This is well documented and has been for many years. It's not necessarily an issue with football recruits, but it's more likely to be the case with a black recruit than other races. It's just a sad truth, so saying they'd go after the NIL money doesn't make him a racist, it makes him a realist. He's not saying it's going to happen every single time but he's right, it's just a higher likelihood. I also don't think it's racist to point out why they would do it; I'd never blame a kid who grew up poor for taking an immediate help for his family. You just have to hope it ends up working out in the end.

I really don't want to go on and on with this, but the racist aspect is that he literally says that there are 49 black players in the top 50, and just one white, the implication being that the 49 black recruits are poor and the one white kid is not. That's a paternalistic, patronizing, racist POV.

As I pointed out, if you said that to people like Ringo's mom (flight attendant), Milton's dad (owns several successful businesses), etc., they would laugh at you and be offended.

I get the statistics that he is pushing out, but that doesn't correlate with the football recruits that he is saying have to emphasize NIL over other decision factors because they are dirt poor. He makes it worse by pointing out the one white kid, assuming the white kid doesn't have the same issues because, well, he's white.

I do think his position reveals an underlying racist POV ... blacks are poor and need NIL help now, but white aren't. He hasn't provided any proof of that, and a lot of the black recruits would be offended by his assumptions.

I may be repeating a point someone else has already made but, even though it looks like the Wild West right now, I don't think it will stay that way.

NIL is the shiny new toy and everyone wants to play with it. But, I think after a couple of seasons, reality will set in and people will realize they just can't afford to do this every year.

By 2025, it will have a much more sane appearance than it does today.

Single-parent households doesn't necessary means poor. It's a weak stat to try to prove that most top level recruits are poor and chasing the highest bidder when the child poverty rate is around 17% here in America.

I must've missed the part about the 49 black players all being poor and the 1 white kid not being poor then. However, as of 2021, around 20% of black people in the US live below the poverty line while the average for all races is around 11%, and white/Asian people are around 8%. Again, stating statistics doesn't make you a racist, but I guess I don't speak for that guy's actual meaning. I agree, no need to go on and on.

You're five times more likely to be impoverished as a single-parent household than a married/cohabiting household. It's not a certainty but it's far, far more likely. Unfortunately, black children live in single-family homes far more likely than most other races. This doesn't prove that most top-level recruits are poor, you're right, but it would help explain some trends that you may see.

Glad we're on the same page :beer2:

But back to the topic

Some thoughts on NIL in CFB
1. I have a hard time believing most of the $$ I hear these players are getting unless there's some serious stipulations in the contracts
2. I wouldn't want my school participating in trying to out bid other schools for unproven HS players and who can immediately leave when ever.
3. On the flip side, I think bidding for more proven transfer portal players will be big in CFB. If Drake Maye wasn't a UNC die-hard, imagine the amount of offers this kid would be getting to transfer anywhere
4. Coaching staffs, path to Pro, facilities, etc still matter and the highest bid will not win everytime. Some schools/coaches have a good track record of getting players to the Pros. These NIL sign-on bonuses are only short-term income, I rather send my kid to somewhere who can maximize their future. For less money, I'm sending my kid as a QB to Lincoln Riley/ Ryan Day. If he was a top level defensive player, I'd send him to Venables / Smart.
