Purdue is a bigger rival to ND than Michigan.

They've played Purdue 85 times. Michigan just 43 times.

Yeah, ND is weird with their rivalries. We have so many over such a long period of time. After the main 3(USC, Navy & Stanford), I'd say the next biggest rivalry is probably Michigan State, followed by Michigan, despite ND having played more against Purdue, NW, Pitt and Army.

Are you assuming that the B1G is going to pay ND for the privilege of giving them that kind of exclusive deal? The ACC pays them and provides a home for their non-football sports.

I’m not sure what the incentive would be to lock themselves into a B1G obligation when they can pretty much schedule anyone they want when they want.

They can play Texas, UGA, BYU, Cincinnati, Army, Navy, Alabama, Stanford, Washington or any other team with a phone call.

To lock themselves in they would want cash.

The issue was how was Notre Dame gonna get what it's seeking on it's new NBC media rights deal.

The Big 10's new contract also has an NBC deal.

ND and the Big 10 would both benefit greatly on such a deal.

ND could stay Independent while they wait for their ACC contract to expire.

I can see that. Notre Dame plays Michigan State more than Michigan as well but I have seen constant pop references to Michigan vs. Notre Dame and it tends to be a more exciting rivalry since both are blue chip programs roughly in the same area.

It would obviously get better ratings than Purdue, NW, etc..

The B1G would possibly go for it if ND agreed to join the B1G (fully) when their contract with the ACC expires.

Yeah, you might be right about that. I'd prefer to stay independent, but if leagues start going to game conference schedules ND's hands are probably forced. If we do join, id obviously like it to be the B1G.

I'm pretty sure all of this has been worked out where NBC is going to pay ND 60mm and they are going to get like 30 million as their share of the ACC for a total of 90mm at the next contract. That is potentially 10mm left on the table but to them, it's acceptable to stay independent and they can put in that with bowl payouts.

If I were Notre Dame, I'd do a similar deal with the Big 10 in football that they did with the ACC.

5 ACC games and keep the annual rivalries against Navy and Stanford = 7 games.

That would leave 5 games remaining for the Big 10. USC being annual to keep that rivalry intact.

ND has always steered away from the BiG, yes it plays certain schools from there but they and the BiG officially been water and oil.. They took their other sports from the BigEast to the ACC after flirting with the Big`12. They probably will keep them in the ACC even after that conference sees 4-6 schools leave.

ND has been leaving money at the table for a long time and until the old bloods finally go, I don't see them joining a conference for it's football

NBC is not paying them 60 mil a season

I don't see why they wouldn't get it when the networks are paying the BIG and SEC schools 100mm each. The ACC pays them 30mm a year for their contribution there.

It's a no-brainer deal especially since those games will lead into the premier B1G game of the day.

They were asking for 75mm and they draw numbers.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Notre Dame committed to at least two games a year against the B1G under new NBC contract.

I can't find where that contract has been signed.

My suspicion is that ND and NBC have agreed in principle and ND is trying to figure out the details of how to work the scheduling because it's not as easy as one would think.

They play a Michigan school most years and USC so it's kind of done anyway.

It maybe written the other way around as well in the B1G Contract to have them play Notre Dame.

if that is the case, it will probably help the cause of Notre Dame staying independent.

When it is all said and done, I think the B1G will get Oregon, Notre Dame, Stanford, and Washington via expansion.

SEC is done until the ACC contract ends.

I think Notre Dame is eventually going to make the move, too much money and losing matchup with USC (along with possibly Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, etc.) will be too much for them.

Controversial Take on here about Notre Dame, I do think Notre Dame's viewership is on a steady decline. It is still top 10 in the nation but Notre Dame was pretty much the leader of CFB up until 2000 and no one really thinks of Notre Dame as the King anymore (even 1990s saw them decline but they still had a reputation. I don't think Notre Dame has been Notre Dame since the Lou Holtz era).

Notre Dame has been surpassed by programs like Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, etc. in perception.

Notre Dame is still a big pickup for the B1G but I think, long-term, programs like Michigan, Ohio State, and USC have greater staying power.
ND is tied to the ACC GOR, aren't they?

with the ACC deal they are making 27 mil..again..WITH the ACC..

I don't see NBC paying $60 mil..

There contract is tied to NBC though and NBC has a contract with the B1G. Effectively, NBC would negotiate with itself. I think there is a buy-out to the ACC but not sure of the size of the buy-out. I don't think it would look anything like OU, Texas, or an ACC team's GOR however since they only have 5 games.

If Texas is worth 100mm then ND is worth 60mm and if they are making 27mm with the ACC that cut will increase along with the conference to 30. This is easy math.

I agree. And with NBC being a player on both sides, they'd be wise to pressure ND to slot at least 2 more Big 10 teams in their open 4 games.

5 ACC + Stanford, USC, Navy.

Michigan St, Purdue, and Michigan make the most sense since they're traditional rivals. However, they could make good viewership ratings against Ohio St, Penn St, Nebraska, Wisconsin, even Iowa.

Pretty sure for they are tied to the ACC GOR.
