Word on the street:

1. With TX and OU leaving the Big 12 is takings it’s war chest and going to get aggressive with expansion.
2. Reports are ASU is very unhappy with the PAC.
3. Evidently there have been discussions with the SMU to join the PAC but that might be their desperation. However the PAC needs teams and there aren’t many options.
4. PAC still does not have a network deal and no progress has been made.

Factor in their recent financial issues and not receiving network money due to overpayment and the PAC is ripe for raiding. The perfect storm is here and the wind is blowing in the Big 12s direction.

Yeah, it doesn't look good with Pac12 based on OU and Texas early leave situation. You get the vibe that the Big12 is making room.

A recent report from The Athletic indicated the conference might not be anywhere near landing a new media deal. Kliavkoff allegedly made conference power players believe the new media deal would pay out roughly $40 million per school. That alleged guarantee also came with multiple networks bidding.

That hasn’t happened, and he might have way over-guaranteed on money. Now, he might be facing down the barrel of a really bad situation.

With the PAC-12 stuck in the mud, Kliavkoff has been given until the middle of April to get the situation figured out and fixed, according to Jason Scheer.

The Big 12 currently has a deal struck worth 31.6 million a school so Kliavkoff has to get deal worth more than that in order to potentially keep his job and maybe even potentially keep the conference together.

He's so in over his head. And he has such a bad situation. Going after SMU and SDSU, say what?

I think the B12 will poach at least 4 of the PAC schools, effectively killing the PAC. We know the parties ... I think the corner schools fit the B12 better than UDub and Ore. Do that to get to 16 and call it a day. Do the 6-3-3 schedule that the SEC is going to do, and be done with it.

If all the PAC can get is Prime, the ADs are going to revolt.

And some people wonder WHY USC is leaving what Gunnery Sergeant Highway would call a "clusterfuck"...

thing is what would the Big XII have gotten without the new 4 that landed them at 31? 25-28? same as projections for the Pac? so going for whats out there isnt really a head scratcher.

That’s not how the math works.

In theory you get paid an equivalent amount for new schools added but you don’t get an equivalent amount plus millions more for the rest of the teams in the conference.

Adding SMU and SDSU isn’t going to get you to 40mm per school and you‘re nuts for thinking it will. No one is watching SMU vs Cal or SDSU vs Washington. No one.

You should be more worried about fending off the B12, not trying to find 4 others.

Also, Cindy, UCF, Houston, BYU >>>>>>>>> SDSU, SMU and two randos.

Got nothing against you or the PAC, but they are in a really bad place. If you can't get anything but Prime, you are done. Players won't want to go to a school where they only get exposure on Prime. See how the NFL is struggling with numbers on Thursday on Prime. If the NFL can't pull that off, the PAC won't.

seriously no one but kliavkaf has ever said 40. everyone else but him is and has been expecting 30

im still not sure the fending off the Big XII thing is as big a thing as the people with no inside knowledge are making it out to be.
Colorado still doesnt want to go back. Utah doesnt want to be in with BYU. and I still dont think Pac schools want to be in a conference going to Florida, West Virginia and Cincinnati.

if you threw in Boise and Fresno i dont think that many arrows would be warranted.

Here's the problem ... BYU (NC), UCF (undefeated season and NY6 Bowl win), Houston (some good seasons), Cincy (1st G5 team in the CFP) all have some level of gravitas. SMU, BSU, SDSU, and Fresno state have none. No one is staying up to watch Cal v. Fresno, or Stanford v. SDSU, etc. As a long-time CFB fan, when I hear those games I am assuming those are contract games where paid the team to come play you. I also have Prime, but if I am flipping around on a Saturday night, I am not going to go check Prime.

Again, I get no joy out of this. But you guys are in a touch situation and my guess is that Utah would be fine to be in the same conference with BYU if it means that they get an extra $20 million a year, or more once the new CFP is in place.

As opposed to USC/UCLA going to New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Ohio?

I don’t think 30 saves your league. The Big 12 is at 31.7 per school so if you just equal that someone bolts to get away from the stupid shit the PAC has pulled the past 10 years and put themselves at some distance from Oregon and Washington who are actively trying to leave.

i actually do think 30 saves the conference.. because they too will be depending on a CFP payment that will get that figure closer to 45/50. How many schools outside Oregon and Udub in that conference legitly have a shot at being BiG members in the future? How many have a shot being in the SEC?

Feels like the Big12 will be there, but if the two mega conferences are staying put for the time being.. It probably is best that they sacrifice a couple..maybe few million to stay in the PAC.

My only gripe if they do this... is that Amazon better give the schools ADs/HCs a terrific pitch on how to advertise this conference who will be showing it's content on Prime.

Right now would be the time for Oregon and Udub to come into the fold and kill the Cal/Stanford influence, if indeed, it's still there.

Yeah, I think the two of them are eating humble pie right now and know it is time to shut up with their academic/political BS that prevented past expansion. They really messed up by not poaching a few teams from the remaining 8 Big12 team before the Big12 rallied to save their league. Now the Pac12 is in Big12's position but there isn't as many attractive G5 options at the moment. The only option that makes 100% sense form G5 is San Diego State to get a presence in Southern California. The other ones are diminishing returns. I don't think SMU brings much of the Texas market.

it also allows a little more texas access for recruiting.
there is also the central time zone and for people to pay attention
they see or hear SMU and automatically ignore them
and they miss where they played Maryland, TCU, Cinci and BYU to 1 score losses last year. and beat Houston.
in 21 beat TCU and UCF
im not saying that they will automatically come in and win the Pac but I think there would be some entertaining games
