Pond Excavation & Build

Alas, federal anti-baiting laws for migratory waterfowl

I didn't say to shoot them while you're actively feeding them. But it will get them used to the area.

Alas, federal anti-baiting laws for migratory waterfowl

There is a local guide who had a hunting show on pbs...his grandfather and his father had hunting shows as well....all three with the same name. The guy also guided hunts. he was busted by the game people with a submergible feeding station on his duck pond. He would load it with feed and then sink it just below the surface where it wasn't seen. And then would bring paid hunters on to shoot a bunch of ducks and also did some of his shows that way.

I ain't got time for that. Besides, the ducks will find their food. The water is for night time rest.

I was kidding. See above. Your comments about a duck pond made me think of that.

All too common on the Flyway.

This was a big deal here at the time. That event canceled out 3 generations of hunting shows on pbs. I couldn't say his father was any better. He did a bass fishing show on lake erie ... I saw this show ... they were killing small mouths in open, very clear water...20 foot or so. l bet they boated a couple hundred fish. Many in the 5 and 6 pound class.

Turned out they were fishing prior to season and were on a major breeding bed for that area. It's easy to tease up a female small mouth sitting on her nest. She attacks anything that comes near it.

Just shitty tactics and this family made bank for many, many years doing it.

Looks like a duck magnet.

Yeah, this is a flyway for ducks, geese, cranes, pelicans, etc.

Hence NRD saying "get after it".
The state even offered to supplement $$ the project, but I said "Thanks, but no thanks".

No reason to invite them in on the project, next thing you know there's a protected species of something and you can't enjoy your own property

I literally have thousands of these snow geese during early spring migration. Canadian geese come through about the same time.

That's the way I see it. If they've got a stake in it they'll be telling me what to do all day every day.

No thanks. I'll dummy up the $40 grand it'll take to see it through and keep my peace.

Exactly nothing is ever free especially from the government

We dug another trench a hundred yards or so away from the pilot hole yesterday, just to see what was there.

The composition was a lot different in that spot. More 2-3 feet of black dirt, then a transition to 6-7 feet of clay, before turning all sand.
Same water table at 6 feet.

The clay is a good thing that we were looking for in sealing the pond and shoring up the walls/berms. We thought we might have to bring some in.

^^ That water leached in like that in about 2 hours. ^^

We're as good as done with the scraper.
The dozer's coming in today and a pump we can run off the tractor PTO to keep it empty while digging, so shitz gonna get real.

Bro you're in clay hell I'm surprised your first hole didn't get any. My whole property is 2-4 inches of topsoil then straight clay. Just carved a hole for basketball unit a couple weeks ago 😂

I’ve always wanted some land with a small lake. I’ve got a small stream in the woods behind my house. Doesn’t get more than shin deep. Plenty of crawfish and spring lizards for bait though
