tOfficial 2021 NHL Playoff thread

Another POV.

Upon the replays and being able to see these breakdowns, I do agree that with @Wingsauce7 when I believe he said that Scheifele could have made a play on the puck. Initially, I didn't think he could have made a proper attempt at poking the puck away. When I am looking at some of these still frames, he was certainly close enough to try.

Idk, it's tough. Kinda like both of the guys in these videos said, it is a weird play. The hit does look clean to me, I still think the charging call is completely fair. My view is more in line with the first video, but I understand where the guy in this video is coming from.

That's one of the bigger bullshit things, he doesn't HAVE to do a diving poke check (and again, diving towards a post is completely fucking stupid. Easy way to fuck up your shoulder on the post or break your wrist if your stick gets trapped on the post) according to the rules of the game. He's allowed to use his body to move the guy off the puck. A half second earlier, he does that. Hell, you could say if he DOESN'T pull up like he does at the hash marks, he probably would have gotten there to lay the hit in time. But of course that would be clear "charging" if he doesn't pull up...yet he still got called for it anyway.

DoPS can eat the biggest bag of dicks on the explanation of the context, which appears to be half the reason for the punishment (other half being the outcome of the hit)"his intention was to deliver a hard, violent check to an opponent with the outcome of both the play and the game already having been decided." he makes contact before the puck crosses the goal line. The game hasn't been decided at that point. The play is not over. That's a chickenshit explanation to try and sell that they are punishing for an injury. You're allowed to finish a check. You're allowed to attempt to get a guy off a puck with your body. You get half a second to put your body on a guy even after they have completed a shot or pass. The league needs to come out and admit they are being pussies and punishing for an injury.

FTR, I have no dog in this fight as a Caps fan (if anything, I'm rooting for Montreal in this series since they knocked out the Leafs and that's awesome and Winnipeg sends tens of thousands of assholes down here every year to shop and they are complete morons when it comes to driving), I just think DoPS has no fucking clue about punishing for intention and context instead of outcome.

He doesn't need to dive. As the frames show, he is inside the crease as Evans is bringing the puck around. It looks rather clear that if he were looking at playing the puck, then he could have extended his stick to swipe the puck away or divert it. Don't get me wrong, he will still likely hit Evans, but there is nothing to dispute in terms of what his goal was. I don't think Scheifele was frustrated, mad, looking for revenge, or any of the like, he just doesn't strike me as that type of player, but like the video showed in its breakdown, he isn't playing the puck. He has pretty much decided that the hit is the best course of action to stop the play, but the hit is a split second too late.

I agree that DoPS is inconsistent and reactionary towards injuries or perception of the hits and that is something that contributes to the inconsistency. I also agree that the game was not over. IIRC, the Jets had just scored recently to make it a one goal game, with a minute left, anything could happen. By no means was that game over at that moment (after the goal, yeah sure).

I have no dog in the fight either. Being perfectly honest, I loved the hit at the time. I was obviously not rooting for an injury, but who doesn't love big hits? My initial reaction from my post was pretty much what happened in real life lol. I said 'DAAAMN' as soon as I saw it. Then I obviously realized the guy was knocked out and hurt and no one wants that. I agree with the charging call, I think a 1 game suspension would have been fine given that he clearly wasn't playing the puck, but honestly, I would have been fine if there was no suspension either. Again, it isn't like Scheifele has a history of anything like this. Either way, given the context, I do think 4 games is too much.

Fucking dude in the begining of that video is an annoying pud.

The Montreal player is an idiot for coming around the net head down and crouched down like that. Scheifele could have killed that dude if he had kept skating hard, but he hadn't taken a stride since he was outside the hash marks. Unfortunate that Evans got hurt, but I really don't have a huge issue with the hit and the suspension is ridiculous.

This is my biggest issue with Evans. He clearly checks his mirrors and knows a hit is coming. He decided to put himself in a vulnerable position to finish the play. It takes balls to do that and good on him to do it in the playoffs. But...he put himself in that position. This turning your numbers or putting your head down shit should be the stuff that is being discouraged when it comes to hitting in hockey. Instead, we're punishing good hits because guys are getting hurt putting themselves in shitty positions. It's fucking dumb.

Has the Montreal PD charged Scheifele with attempted murder yet?

So profoundly fucking stupid. Reaves and Wilson get a combined half of what Scheifele gets for complete bush league after whistle shit, but Shef gets punished due to the fact the dude got injured. Punish the outcome, not the intent. DoPS is trash.
This has been the problem from Day 1. A dangerous hit is a dangerous hit. Reaves should have been suspended for the remainder of the playoffs for his repeated behavior. Instead... nothing. Scheifele, who isn't even 1/10th the goon that Reaves is, gets a 4-game ban, when he is at least trying to make a play.

Hating on Reaves when nothing happened.

They can't even be consistent within the same week. If Scheifele's hit is suspendable, so is Graves' hit. That hit was even later, more malicious because he's clearly blindsiding a guy AND the NHL gets their injury boner... but... nope.

I do love the NHL, but they're not perfect. One of the things they've struggled with for over a decade is this business of dangerous hits and supplemental discipline. Other than the minor team preference / Tim Peel makeup call BS, the referees do a pretty good job, when infractions are codified in the rule book. But there's far too much subjectivity given to off-the-ice suspension and fines. They do absolutely penalize outcomes, and not the behavior -- which would be fine, if that's what they claimed they wanted to reform. Instead, it seems they don't even watch the hit, and instead analyze who the offender and victim are, and whether anyone sustained an injury.

Dude, do you even hockey?
I know Vegas is my team, but I honestly didn't think Reaves did much at all. Looked like a bunch of face washing. His knee was only visibly on his head for a couple seconds.

Reaves is a POS with zero hockey skills. Only on the ice for one reason.

That was a must win.

Sunday's game is too. Hopefully we can head back to Colorado with the series tied up.

That's what I'm hoping for. If Vegas goes down 3-1 it's probably over.

seriously though, hope Tavares is alright.

Bad call on Marchessault and Makar to end the period all knotted up at 1-1.

Welp, back to Denver….
Yeah. Pretty happy with tonight, Vegas seemed to keep the pressure on them all night long. Grubauer is a stud though.

Huge game 5 on Tuesday.

Hats off to the Habs though, these guys are on fire.
