The Shoe's a tough place to make a first career start.

The D. Obviously it's only one game but I haven't seen them look like that in a couple of years. The next two games are junk games. Can't properly judge where the D is until conference play starts. I liked seeing the 2nd half shutout. Not when's the last time that happened.

And the offense. Not anywhere near as dynamic as I was expecting. No worries though. And gotta give the N.D. D credit for how they played. Hope whatever Smith-Njigba's issues were he'll be okay and it's nothing serious.
My brother is a lifelong ND fan -- he didn't think ND would stay within 3 scores. He said their entire offense this year will be Mayer. He said they have no play makers at the skill positions and a new starting QB. Once Patterson was ruled out -- he said OSU would wreak havoc on the line as Patterson is the guy who makes the reads and calls the blocking schemes for the line. I think that is why you saw Hall go untouched on a few plays up the middle.

I was still impressed with the overall play, but ND simply isn't a very good offense. They returned Williams at RB and Mayer at TE. Their best returning WR is 5th year senior who was a CB, then a QB, then a CB, then a WR. So OSU did the smart thing -- stacked the box, took away the run and forced a new QB to try and beat them.

Remember though -- with a full strength offense at ND with 2 WR's who went to the NFL, an experience QB and the same running back -- they only put up 10 points on Cincy last year.

It is a step in the right direction for OSU, but this isn't a juggernaut offense OSU shut down.

I highly doubt Patterson was going to be making the read and calling blocking schemes from the left guard position. He was moved from center this year

I'd flip Penn State and Wisconsin. Still not sold on Michigan State but right now I don't know who I'd rank above them. But if I had to guess, I'd wager they'd end up around 6/7 in the final rankings.

Notre Dame's offense probably isn't elite but some people are acting like they are some scrub (Like Colorado State or something) The defense was noticeably different in a good way though and it will only get better as the year goes on.

The offense put it together late in the game when they actually adjusted. Notre Dame's defense is pretty good so I don't think theres a need to panic, they will get it together better. Having Arkansas State and Toledo to work out the kinks before Wisconsin (at home thankfully) is nice

I thought that 17.5 points was insane. I'm sure alotta people made money on that. Don't follow N.D. so I don't know their roster. And their QB can't be truly evaluated yet, he's made one start. But the offense didn't look good at all.

N.D. might have to lean heavily on the D until the offense starts clicking.

And great point that what Ohio State did on D can't be looked as much right now. One game doesn't erase how awful they have been the last couple of years.

It doesnt. However I think you could at least tell there was a difference, especially in it being more organized and seemingly more effort being there. Especially from the front 7.

The offense also was a little off because Smith-Njigba was pulled outta the game. Like I said in a another comment I'm not concerned at all. They'll get everything together in time for the conference opener.

Looks like JSN might not play this week. Day said they aren't going to put him out there if there's a chance he could get hurt long term.

This is a good thing IMO. Keep JSN out against Arkansas State and Toledo to get 100% and also so Stroud and the other guys can hopefully form a better rhythm. A lot of the issues looked like timing issues, there were quite a few missed passes that shoulda been decent to big gains due to bad timing.

Oh no question there was a big difference. You could see it though out the game compared to previous years.

I think it's safe to say this years D won't be nearly as dysfunctional.

Let him rest and get health. He won't be needed against Arkansas State or Toledo. But would like yo see him 100% for the Wisconsin game on 9/24.

ND's Oline is supposedly pretty good. The fact that the Dline more than held their own is a big advancement. They might have a shit passing offense right now (ND) but the fact that we stopped the run completely as well is a positive sign.

Last years team woulda been getting blown off the ball constantly.

I don't know WTF has gotten into Tommy Eichenberg. He looks like a COMPLETELY different player from the regular season last season.

Also I hope Day now realizes its OK to commit to the run instead of trying to force throwing most of the time when things get tough.

Yeah stopping the run isn't something the D had been good at in previous seasons. I can say after only one game though I feel better about the D than I thought I would. Really was expecting a score like 38-30.

ND lost their starting QB and their starting RB from last year. Their best OL was out as well. OSU looked LIGHT YEARS better against the run, but the only returning backs ND had were Tyree and Diggs they averaged just over 4 yards per carry last year on over 100 carries, mostly against backups. Kyren Williams left for the NFL.

ND's offense is going to be their TE and that's about it. My brother told me -- he thinks they didn't use Buchner to run more because they are afraid he will get hurt and the season would be over for them as they don't trust their backup at all. He told me the guy's name, but don't remember. Something about a short kid from Connecticut. I zone out when my brother talks about ND, as I couldn't care less. :pound:

That is why you saw OSU sell out to stop the run. They were putting 9 in the box on a lot of plays. The LB's were coming downhill all game and the safeties would step in behind them. ND had no one that could hurt them down field.

Excellent game plan by OSU though. One thing I will say -- they looked alot more organized and the players knew what they were supposed to be doing. Last year they looked like they were kind of doing their own thing.

They couldn't stop the run a lot of the time last year even when they completely sold out to stop it, lol. (see Oregon and Michigan)

I'm not talking ND up by any means. They are a average offense where it stands right now. But there was a clear improvement on things like scheme and organization though. Don't think there was a single play where guys were running around like a chicken with its head cutoff trying to figure out what they were supposed to be doing. This is just game 1 though. It was a good start considering the opponent wasnt some G5 sacrificial lamb

That will be huge for OSU. It will simply open up their passing game even more if they commit to running like they did against ND

Not wishing injury on anybody, but I hope he takes until October to come back.
