My brother is a lifelong ND fan -- he didn't think ND would stay within 3 scores. He said their entire offense this year will be Mayer. He said they have no play makers at the skill positions and a new starting QB. Once Patterson was ruled out -- he said OSU would wreak havoc on the line as Patterson is the guy who makes the reads and calls the blocking schemes for the line. I think that is why you saw Hall go untouched on a few plays up the middle. The Shoe's a tough place to make a first career start.
The D. Obviously it's only one game but I haven't seen them look like that in a couple of years. The next two games are junk games. Can't properly judge where the D is until conference play starts. I liked seeing the 2nd half shutout. Not when's the last time that happened.
And the offense. Not anywhere near as dynamic as I was expecting. No worries though. And gotta give the N.D. D credit for how they played. Hope whatever Smith-Njigba's issues were he'll be okay and it's nothing serious.
I was still impressed with the overall play, but ND simply isn't a very good offense. They returned Williams at RB and Mayer at TE. Their best returning WR is 5th year senior who was a CB, then a QB, then a CB, then a WR. So OSU did the smart thing -- stacked the box, took away the run and forced a new QB to try and beat them.
Remember though -- with a full strength offense at ND with 2 WR's who went to the NFL, an experience QB and the same running back -- they only put up 10 points on Cincy last year.
It is a step in the right direction for OSU, but this isn't a juggernaut offense OSU shut down.
