Hope you guys turn it around. I wish Sims well and might watch a few games to see how he does. Who knows, maybe your coaches have figured out what’s been ailing him.
If the problems that plague Nebraska are what I suspect they are, that doesn't bode well for Sims.
There just seems to be little to no leadership from the upperclassmen. I believe that has permeated down the line from previous upperclassmen dating back to Bo Pelini. Pelini would start family members of his and his coaches, so they could fill their scrapbooks. Since their uncles and daddy's were coaches they knew they'd start and didn't have to put any effort into anything other than the bare minimums.
This is O-Line coach Barney Cotton's son. falling on his ass. Put that in your scrapbook, kid.
If I were Rhule I'd be taking this first off-season and watching the training table, the weight room, film room, etc. like a hawk. Who's focused? Who's motivating others? I'd rather have a 2* walk-on starting on Saturdays than some 4 star diva that puts in little effort because he's used to being better than everyone else in high school and is just there for the ride.
I'd be grilling players in team meetings about the playbook in front of their teammates.
"
On fill in a play where are YOU supposed to be and what are YOU supposed to do?"
Embarrass the hell out of them in front of their teammates (if they don't know). It will also tell me who's using personal time outside of practice to study their playbooks. If someone doesn't know then everybody runs the stadium steps. It's the equivalent of a blanket party in the military.
It's difficult to execute a system when a handful of players don't know where they supposed to be and what they're supposed to do. It's that way in every walk of life. The best boss I ever had would call people out in front of their peers. "
The train doesn't leave without the caboose", he'd say.
Take the (1-11)(2-10) first season and flush the upperclassmen turds. Maybe that's what he did at Temple and Baylor to get them turned around? It's got to start somewhere.
