Don't forget that Amazon Prime has the MGM catalog now. They've cranked out some solid movies. A lot of average/shit movies too. Don't think any of that matters one way or the other, original series are what they need to keep people subscribed. If they just have a handful of those, and pop out a good movie every now and then, people can just subscribe for a month or two, watch everything they want, cancel, repeat 6 months later.
Disney and HBO are constantly turning out original series, and they release an episode per week. If you're into their content it's not really worth stopping your subscription. Plus Disney has all the Disney content, Marvel, and some Fox content (like the Simpsons), HBO has WB and DC and all their backlog of content. Now Peacock and Paramount have all the classic network shows.
They need to change how they release their original content, and commit to more of it, accept not all of it is gonna be some huge cultural thing and that it still has value way more than they need to start changing their subscription/ad models. That's just gonna drive more away.
Prime is actually pretty good but it's way too long between seasons. I have liked:
Hannah
Jack Ryan
Reacher
The Boys
Terminal List
Nazi Hunters
I just wish there was more consistency in when things are released so there aren't lags.
We've had Apple for a year and the only things we really liked were Ted Lasso and Tehran (which is a great show that no one talks about). When our free period is up I don't see us renewing because there are a lot of misses on Apple and everything leans to woke politics.
I think once Paramount really gets rolling on its new stuff that isn't Star Trek it will be a player as I find myself watching their stuff as much as anything else.
If I had to rate streaming services I would put them at:
1. HBOMAX - The DC stuff and HBS series just make this consistently good and there are some lulls but for the most part there is always something on there I'm watching. Plus pretty soon I think this will be bundled with Discovery.
2. Paramount - I'm biased because I like the Star Trek stuff but I'm a big fan of the Yellow Stone universe stuff and if they make a Sicario series like they've talked about I'll be pumped.
3. Netflix - When they have good original content its worth it like Ozark, Orange is The New Black, House of Cards and my favorite Last Chance U. Problem it is so hit and miss and you are right that they don't pay enough attention to base hits and swing too much for the fences and strike out. I can live without it.
4. Disney - I get this for a great deal being bundled with Hulu so its worth the $5 I pay to see the SW and Marvel shows.
Hulu's original programming doesn't really move a needle for me but I use them for Live TV so I'll always have the subscription plus the bundle with Disney and ESPN makes it all a decent value.
If I dropped one it would be Netflix in heartbeat but the truth is I'm not paying for it anyway as I long onto my Mom's subscription. I pay for HBOMax, HULU/Disney/ESPN and Paramount. I'm happy with those and don't feel a need for anything else unless it's free.
