It is more like a biographical/historical novel. I admit that I actually prefer the more philosophical books.

I like stories. Fiction all the way for me. Reality bites.
But I couldn't get the hang of the sequels.

The sequels do read slower. Much more of a read a bit and try to make sense of it in the overall series, but I found it all ties together.

I believe his son has taken the mantle and written a few books since Frank’s death. Are those any good? And do they follow chronologically (ie, follow Leto) or do they take place during Paul’s time (or prior)?

6 books in the original series by Frank Herbert.
His son Brian Herbert has written way more than a few: 13 prequel novels already published, with 1 more prequel coming next year to make 14; enough short stories that getting an accurate tally of the short stories is hard; and 2 sequel novels.
Much of the reading fanbase absolutely loathe/hate the Brian works to the point of considering them noncanon.

The original 6 are what I was referring to. I read 1 of Brian's and didn't waste time after that.
Finally watched Dune. I feared correctly I'm guessing, should've been a massive film or miniseries with this budget, felt that there wasn't much to really absorb, felt more of a background movie.

I read the first three books in the '70s, and saw both the '80s film and the later Syfy Channel films. I still need to see this new version.

Knew it was a loser immediately after watching for 15 minutes but decided to press on and hope the best was yet to come. LOL. People in robes. Dreams. Voices. Guys sword fighting. Telepathic commands. Explosions. Exploding space ships. Confusing plot if there is one. Who should I root for. Who are the good guys, Paul and parents, I'll guess. The dopiest movie made in years maybe decades. Solid loser. Unintelligent director with money to spend and time on his hands.

No. Haven’t read the book(s) but I like movies that stand on their own. In this I guess the sets were good but the movie was a bore to me.
Box office agrees with me. First weekend, $41 mill, 2nd - $13 mill, -62%; 3rd weekend - $6 million, -51%. So the movie didn’t have legs; most tended to hate it. I suppose you had to have read the book(s) to get into it for any enjoyment. Glad you liked it. I used a 48 hour free HBO tryout to see it.

Uh, what? Those are incredibly good box office numbers, since Dune was simultaneously released to streaming on HBO Max, so people didn't even have to go to the theater to see it. People were going to see it in those numbers at the theater even though they could watch it at home!
On top of being a major box office success, Dune was also a great critical success, at 83% critics score on RottenTomatoes, and winning the most awards (6) of any film at the 94th Academy Awards.
Not just critics, but audiences loved it: A- CinemaScore, 90% audience score on RottenTomatoes, 8.0 on IMDB.
This film has been massively successful and is now the start of a new major film franchise. The studio was very happy with how the film performed, hence why they greenlit and now have Dune: Part 2 under production.
