Ethan Hawks and Travolta in a western. I like things that are both a good satire of the genre and a good example of it too (Starship Troopers, What Does the Fox Say). This western is good, and it slowly evolves (devolves?) into a farce and a satire of the genre. Really well done.

The Woman King

Enjoyable action/freedom fighter pic. Viola Davis was as imposing as the general of an all- woman army. Had a nice villain who was easy to hate. Definitely top grade popcorn movie.

Watched Smile on a plane yesterday. Very creepy movie. Worth checking out if you're into that sort of thing.

not even close to finishing it yet unfortunately, but 15 minutes in and women talking is as exciting as the title suggests.

The Menu

Streaming on HBO and it’s kinda of a horror/thriller with some very dark comedy. It’s creepy quirky but does a good job of building anxiety plus it’s pretty good casting.

If like light horror with creepy vibes this is your movie.

Watched that last night and I found it pretty delightful.

I was kind of confused about the boyfriend character. The whole cooking the lamb thing...was his "crime" that he was a poser?

My take was the following:

The boyfriend basically had no life and more or less joined the Chief's cult. The guy knew he was going to die at the end of the night and he knew everyone there was also but he brought that escort with him anyway knowing he was condemning her to die.

The boyfriend went from a poor victim to a massive selfish SOB.

The movie is built to allow people to come to their own conclusions so I'm guessing the boyfriend (who wasn't a boyfriend but a paying customer) brought that girl with him because she represented the girls he wanted but could never get.

We Have a Ghost (Netflix)

Surprisingly good. Not award winning or anything like that, but it was more thought out than I was expecting. There is a police chase scene that felt a little “deaf” in today’s climate, but really, that’s my only problem with the movie (for what it is).

Every Night Is Saturday Night - The Bobby Keys Story

What a sax man.

I never knew he was born the same day as Keith Richards.

Black pilot in a Korean War era squadron.
In no way is this movie bad. I give it props for keeping things subtle (so many movies would not with such subject matter), but the risk you run in being subtle is never actually grabbing people. This movie just does not until the end.
The effects of the second crash were amazing. And the cinematography of that shot was breathtaking.

I have two for submission:

The Assistant- That chick from Ozark. It was just plain horrible. After 15 mins I told the Mrs "this movie needs to get somewhere and fast." It never did

Wine Country-Kind of falls into the Bridemaids real. It was actually decent for a stupid fun movie

Juliet, Naked

It’s a half a movie. All set ups and no real
Exploration. Just hitting cliche nostalgia points and a perfunctory befitting soundtrack.

Great satire. Great farce. Goes off the rails in all the right ways. It’s like Dewey Cox but with better acting and a better storyline. It’s absolutely awesome.

So. It’s filmed well, great acting, great pacing, tells the story it wants to tell about Hollywood history and decadence and such with life parallels. It just didn’t land for me and seemed a bit gratuitous despite Pitt and Robbie being as captivating as always.

Departed

Saw it for the first time since the theaters over 15 years ago.

I think I avoided watching it again because I was afraid it wouldn’t stand up to my memory of it being a great movie. I was OK THINKING it was a great movie, and I didn’t want to challenge that opinion.

Well, it truly is a GREAT movie. I need to see it about 15 more times before I can say if it compares to other greats like Goodfellas or Godfather, but I think it has potential to be in that class. The scene of a phone call, where neither person says a single word, is one of the greatest scenes I remember in a movie in a while.

9/10 (hard to give a movie a legit 10/10 after only 2 views)
