"baseball is so much better now"

There are actually two different kinds and it's an important distinction. Neurogenic TOS is the "career ender", vascular TOS is not nearly as bad.
Didn’t know that. But when I hear that about a pitcher, my first thought will always be “career is over.” I’m guessing guys like Chris Carpenter and Chris Young that were able to come back and be effective had the less severe kind

Looks like J.R.'s was arterial, which is the 3rd kind.

Oh hey! Speaking of the Padres, how about that overrated Tony Gwynn? Slap hitter!

For a deep pull I've got a college buddy that went to high school with George Lombard.
Well, Reds pitcher from the 50’s, Corky Valentine was one of my grandpa’s best friends. I never knew he was a former MLB player until well after he died though. I just remember him as the retired cop that always wore a Braves cap that was always sitting on my grandpa’s front porch on weekday afternoons when I’d get off the bus there after school

Too bad he only played for the Reds. That would be a good one for the grid

Used to be like that. Roger Maris spent part of the offseason after he broke Ruth's record helping Whitey Herzog build his house. National celebrity, just stacking bricks.

Corky only lasted one full season and part of another. He probably wasn’t even a celebrity in Cincinnati

He would look stupid against the worst pitcher in the Majors today.

Dumb!

Guys like Walter Johnson, Lefty Grove, Bob Feller all threw mid to upper 90's. I feel sorry for people who think today's game is better.

2022
15 players hit .300+

1970
40 players hit 300+

2022
23 players hit 30+ home runs

1970
19 players hit 30+ home runs

2022
152 players struck out 100+ times

1970
27 players struck out 100+ times

What it comes down to is if you enjoy watching players strikeout today's game is better.

A strikeout is the same as any other out. Batting average means nothing.

Those guys weren’t throwing high 90’s, and if they were, they were exceptions. Kyle Hendricks would have considered a flame thrower back then.

Doesn't matter, the game used to be better!

No, it didn’t. Pretty well every stadium back then was what Oakland is now. Mixed use pieces of shit that nobody truly remembers fondly.

The athletes are better, the game is better. Only boomers stuck in the past disagree

Do you think any of the “greats” of yesteryear who hit 0.400 would even sniff 0.300 in today‘s game? Of course not. They’re all dead.

And then you have fuckers like Ted Williams that would rather fly airplanes than play baseball and then shrink during their only postseason series
He had the clapp from his service time and was married to 2 women at the same time. The only thing worse than that was having to play IN Boston
