They must have changed their minds. I'm guessing they didn't realize the basic infrastructure of the stadium was crumbling as bad as it is.
I kid you not, the last time I was there we commented on (hand sized) chunks of concrete laying on the ground under the bleachers. You could look up and see where they'd fallen off. "Watch your head".

BTW 50 miles to go to Arrowhead and watch the game is nothing.
I spent a few weeks in Lawrence working about 8 years ago. Many of the people I met commuted from Lawrence to KC to work.

Looks like they indeed decided it was in such bad shape ( a major safety issue with crumbling concrete) that they needed to tear it down and start anew.
Kansas Athletics is excited to announce that construction on David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium will escalate this week as the demolition of Phase I of the football stadium has begun as part of the University of Kansas Gateway District project.

We were sitting in the endzone bleachers on the right and we'd entered the gate under them going into the game.
That's where we noticed the chunks of concrete and were like 'WTF?'.
We'd decided to road-trip to Lawrence on a whim and didn't even have tickets.
iirc we parked in the front yard of one of those houses for $10 and they sold us our tickets for $10. Our walk to the gate was less than half a block.
When I was a principal I had a teacher that I was pretty sure was hitting the sauce. But I never could catch her in the act or even really impaired. In fact, she was a much better teacher when I thought she had hit it than when she hadn’t! And the students never suspected anything and really liked her and learned. Go figure.
She got married and left before I could prove anything.

I mean it sucks if you're a college student that wants to go and not worry about taking a 50 mile Uber. I've also heard Lawrence is an underrated college town. I used to have a client in Chicago that was a KU alum and he loved it there.

The Iowa St game being an old Big 8 rival will likely push sell-out numbers. Iowa St fans will be into watching the clones play in an NFL venue.
Hopefully KC learned their lesson from the 90's Kick Off Classic between Nebraska and Oklahoma St.
The traffic jams on the highways from every direction around Arrowhead were 3 miles long as they tried to get vehicles through the gate of the parking lot.
There were people out on the highway outside of their vehicles playing catch football, tossing Frisbee, etc. Shit didn't move for 10 minutes at a time or longer and that was multiple times.
If we'd had 20 cases of beer in the back we probably could have paid for the entire trip. LOL
