The beginning of the end of the NCAA as we know it ...

That Sucks The Office GIF

Let's be honest here this is not anything we weren't expecting I just didn't think it would happen this soon.

Make no mistake the majority of this is the NCAA basketball tournament and the billion dollars a year the NCAA makes of it. The schools have stripped them of every other source of revenue so to kill the NCAA all you have to do is have the SEC and B1G pull their schools out and the NCAA will never get another TV contract for March Madness.

They are toast.
I’m very much hoping the NCAA tournament prevents the B1G and SEC from breaking away totally.

This isn't how it's going to work, in my opinion. Here's why:

1. Who in that group is going to be willing to be the Vanderbilt of the group? Wins and losses are zero-sum. Obviously, each game has a winner and loser. With that conference, some of those teams will lose 6-9 games a year. Who is going to sign up for that? Which media company is going to pay for that?

2. The B1G and the SEC will be in charge, but my guess is that most of the P5 will all be in whatever group they break off with. Maybe around 60 teams. They will set some type of arrangement where you contract with football players, perhaps other athletes. But it will be more of a P5/G5 split.

3. While the B1G and SEC are stepping up, neither is going to give up their power. As an initial thought, who would be the commissioner of the conference you have above? You think either the B1G or SEC commissioner is going to get rid of their position?
Tennessee is already the Vanderbilt of that group

While a moneymaker, they can have their own tournament and keep the money
It’s the NCAA biggest money maker. But there is zero incentive for any other conference to give in to a B1G/SEC run basketball tournament when they are getting left out for football. And I assure you, those other conferences will be needed to continue cashing in on March madness.

Well only because the ncaa doesn't run the fbs postseason

Still it’s a nice chunk of change that March madness. And honestly it may be the only deterrence (as small as it could be) to keep teams in the ACC and B12 from getting left behind in football by the P2.

Big loss of revenue for ncaa if those conferences aren't in tournament

But still it’s probably more than a tournament involving just the SEC/B1G. Still plenty of big names (in CBB) outside those two conferences.

It's more....split a lot more ways

Is the P2 run bball tournament going to off set the cost of not being included in football? I highly doubt it which makes me believe this is potentially a hill to die on to at least try to not get left behind. Theres really nothing else that comes to mind to deter the P2 from breaking off for football.

NFC/AFC
Eastern Conference/Western Conference
American League/National League
B1G/SEC

College sports have fully embraced pro sports alignment.

The super conference.
Fat is gonna have to be trimmed. Wisky MIGHT make it.. if we can find another to come with to make it an even number.
More like a Super League made up of the two power conferences.
If that is the direction, I would expect several more teams added, then each conference broken down into divisions, much like the NFL is set up. With a playoff model that mirrors the NFL as well.

That’s an awful lot of words, when they could’ve just said, “We want a lot, LOT more money!”…
Gee. I wonder who of us was saying this a decade ago. Hmmm.

Alabama
Auburn
Ohio State
Texas
OU
Tennessee
Georgia
Texas A&M
Michigan
Nebraska
Penn State
Florida
LSU
USC
Oregon
Washington
Notre Dame
Florida State

And that’ll be that cause..

It’s what’s best for the student athlete :noidea::heh:
Nope

Yeah, I don't know why they agreed to a 12 team playoff to begin with. I guess they didn't anticipate the PAC 12 crumbling.

And now, why not just got back to a four team playoff exclusively for the SEC and B1G? They have the money and clout to keep the ACC, Big 12 and G5s at bay. I've always pushed for the G5s to have their own playoff. Now I guess the ACC and Big 12 can be included in that one as well.

Two CFPs
Big boy one with four B1G/SEC teams
Little boy one with 12 ACC/Big 12/G5 teams

Why not?

Something like that certainly looks like that’s the plan. He’ll even 6 or 8 teamer is even more money between the 2 of them.

If that happens I’m hoping every other conference tells them to pound sand when it comes to March madness. But I doubt that’ll happen.
