PSU did play them that year though, won by 10 at michigan when they were at full strength. michigan just really wasn't good.

Yeah, probably same for Michigan and Penn State. I'd say that is also the common factor in the SEC. The top ones create a lot of blowouts. The difference in the top and bottom of the B1G/SEC is probably more extreme than the other conferences.

But hey, the fans of teams on the winning sides of blowouts are happy and watch those games. And I guess the fans of the teams getting blown out do as well. As least the viewership indicates so.

I seem to be in the minority of people who think MSU is going to have a good season. I don't think they're gonna win 10/11 games, but I think Chiles is going to be great, and Jonathan Smith is a massive upgrade at HC. They'll have a lot of new faces, but I think their schedule lines up nicely for them to see 7-8 regular season wins potentially.

Man, I just can't see them getting to that. I do think they have a huge upgrade at QB and HC, but they still have a lot of toss up games. OSU, Oregon and Michigan are for sure losses. Going 7-2 in the rest(or 8-1) would be a big surprise to me. They're going to have to upset MD and BC to have any realistic shot at winning 7/8 games IMO.

I'm honestly not sure I'd put michigan as a for sure loss. As good as their defense is in spots, they are a couple of injuries away from disaster. Their offense isn't going to be the same as last year, and that defense is going to be on the field a lot more. They honestly remind me of 2011 OSU a lot, only with a bit better defense and way worse offense.

Maryland/BC do have the advantage of playing them early, you do have a point. I'm honestly just very high on Chiles, and I could see both of those games being shootouts.

If I'm a betting man, I probably have them going 5-7 or 6-6, but 7-5 wouldn't be surprising to me either. Maybe I'm a year early but I like the future for them.

weird take on a team that went 4-8 and only won 2 conference games. smith took like 4 years to get things going at Oregon state. Im not sure the rebuild is as big but will still take time. the middle of the schedule is brutal and could hurt them in the last 3rd. Seriously Ohio State, at Oregon, Iowa and at michigan. at least they get a bye between Oregon and Iowa. 6-6

Obviously last year's team and this year's team are two very, very different teams. Smith inherited a talentless team that had to be rebuilt and went 5-7 in his second season after 2-10 in his first year. Then covid happened and stunted his progress, but the improvement was evident. Clearly he has more talent on MSU this year (MSU was 27th overall from a talent standpoint in 2023, which shows how bad the coaching was, while Oregon State was 67th in 2018), and he has his hand-picked QB that I'm high on. OSU and Oregon are surefire losses, but I think they'll compete. I don't see any other absolute guaranteed losses though.
 
I just saw that Rutgers doesn't have to play Ohio State, Michigan or Oregon this year. WTF? These big conferences don't have a clue who it their best team, next best team, etc at the end of the year.
