Oh yeah for sure their defense was really terrible. Their defense honestly played pretty well against ND, but the Online was just awful that game too. I agree Caleb tried to do to much that game, but I think it was because he had too. I think their defense will be improved(can't be much worse), but I just don't think enough to be an elite team(10+ wins). It'd be great if they were 11-0 heading into the ND game for ND's SOS metrics, but I just can't see it. That game against LSU is gonna be a fun one, and we should gain a lot of intel from it. The winner has a real shit at making the back end of the CFP IMO.
I look at what Lynn did with UCLA's defense in the course of just one year, and it wouldn't shock me to see him have those sort of results with USC considering he's going to have even more talent. I did underestimate the losses USC has on offense outside of Caleb, but there's obviously still talent there. If they can establish the running game with Lloyd gone, that's going to determine a lot, but I think Moss is going to be the better QB in many of their matchups, including LSU. I will definitely be tuned in for that one though, and I'd agree the winner there is in a great place to make the CFP.

Because ESPN's rankings are stupid. By year's end I could see USC, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, and even Nebraska being ranked. If Will Rogers adapts well to Jedd Fisch's offense, Washington could even threaten to win 8 games or so.

Yeah I think they'll be improved, just how much is the question. They were 90th in defensive efficiency last year. Can they get to about top 40ish or so? That's quite a leap. They were 5th in offense last year. That's likely to take a step back, though I still think they will be good(top 25ish). If they can still stay a top 15 offense, I think they stand a great chance at 10-2/11-1 in the regular season. They will basically be the opposite of ND this year on offense. USC has really good skill players, but questions on the Oline. ND will have a good Oline, with questions at the skill players.

I'm trying to determine where they are in the pecking order of the B1G and ND. For sure I think they are behind OSU and Oregon. I'd probably lean PSU and Michigan as having more too. And I'd probably lean ND having more as well. The good news is they don't have to play OSU and Oregon. Man all their early games are really fascinating. LSU, then @Michigan in the B1G opener, followed by Wisconsin then @Minnesota, then home against PSU. I'm also trying to figure out if travel will have any impact as the season progresses. They'll be flying a lot back and forth this year.

So Lynn took UCLA from 88th in total defense to 11th in his first year, and from 79th in efficiency to 6th. I think making a jump up to 40ish is highly likely and possibly even underestimating what they can do. If that's the case, I think they're definitely a 10/11 win team.

If I'm looking at pecking order, it's a toss up with PSU. I'd have ND over them at this point as well, especially if Riley Leonard is healthy. That michigan game is going to be a major barometer for both teams, but thankfully both of them have tough OOC game tests as well. I'd probably go Ohio State, Oregon, ND, USC, PSU, michigan if those are the teams I'm trying to rank, though ND/USC/PSU are definitely wild cards that I could be totally wrong about also. I just can't wait for the season to start man.

Yeah, there's no question he's a huge upgrade at DC. I guess part of my hesitation on that side of the ball is that Riley has never had a good defense in all his years. It's really never mattered though because he's had a stud at QB every year(minus the Covid year with Rattler who was just okay). They do have a ton of experience on defense on their 2-deep, so that'll certainly help if there is that huge jump. If they struggle against LSU with all they lost on offense, that won't be a great sign. Even though LSU will still have talent on offense. And agreed, can't wait for the season to get here. Week 1 has a shit ton of good games.

at the end of last year there were no 8 win teams ranked.

I think he's hampered himself with deadbeat coaches like Grinch. This upgrade to Lynn is like when OSU went from Ed Warriner to Ryan Day at OC, though. I'm not guaranteeing that USC has a top 10 defense like UCLA last year since they do have a tougher schedule, but I expect a big leap forward, and wouldn't be shocked to see their recruiting pick up on that side as well. Like you said, they have a lot of experience, which should only help.

I'm bummed OSU has such a shitty OOC this year but that ends next year with Texas/Georgia/Alabama in the next 6 years thankfully. I'm still really excited for the other OOCs though, this is a great year for them for sure.

There were at the end of the regular season though, which is all that matters since bowl games are irrelevant.
The only way for Wisconsin to make Top 25.

Losses to Alabama, Oregon, Penn St, and USC seem to be givens. They would need to sweep the rest of their schedule. Still have Iowa, Nebraska and Rutgers to negotiate.

After waiting 26 years and my favorite team winning it all, I haven't been as excited as years past. Feels like the mission is accomplished and not much to look forward to this season. Not sure if it will be more or less fun watching this season. Definitely will be more laid back watching it. Definitely not a fan of the realignment. Rather go back to the old regional conferences & rivalries. Heck bring back the Big East along with the Pac.

Probably because it was a go for broke type of championship and now the whole unit was gutted without leaving much of a succession plan. It's what sets the truly elite programs apart from the others.

Watching the usual Michigan sunshine pumping "insiders" trying to hype that essentially Indiana level QB room is hilarious.

If Alex Orji can't beat out Jack Tuttle, they may lose 6 or more games. They have a good defense, but they can't play at an elite level when they're constantly on the field.

Tuttle was mediocre at the absolute best when he got playing time at Indiana. Yet you got these sunshine pumpers acting like he is some hidden gem that's been waiting in the shadows ready to break out.

Orji is awful as a passer and I think even the Michigan coaches know it. I could see a lot of goofy 2 QB system shit with Tuttle & Orji this year.

Either Orji or Tuttle will be the absolute worst QB to start for Michigan since Steven Threet/Nick Sheridan

The OL is going to take a bit of a step back too, regardless of how much Michigan fans want to act like they subbed their OL like fucking hockey lines and all these dudes replacing last years guys have some amazing experience.

I expect the defense to be pretty good but not as good. DL will be decent but not as deep as last year. LB is a big ? and CB is even a big ? after Johnson. Safeties should be ok.

I don't think they'll lose 6 games though. I think 8-4 is the most realistic option.

There's still enough there probably not to lose to the lower level teams that they shouldn't lose to. Unless the new coaches totally screw the pooch.
