Big 12 thread

Look quick! Is there a star in the East? Kansas is now leading the Big XII and is enjoying an undefeated season.

That's not how it's being presented.

It's being presented that the Big 12 drops to G5 the moment TX/OU leave.

The Orphan 8 have been "sapping the money from TX/OU for years".

I do think you bring up a very valid conversation point.

What defines a Power 5 league?

My assumption is the league has a National Title contender. Would the Big12 still have that?

Looking at the teams, Kansas State competed at high level in late 90s and early 2000s, West Virginia in the Big East without Miami, Oklahoma State in 2011, and Baylor/TCU in 2014.

Outside of that, no real contenders in the league once OU and Texas are gone. We dog Texas but they have resources to compete at high level and in scheme of things, 2009 title appearance is not that far away.

You are looking at performance on the field as the defining factor. IMO what defines it is how much media money a conference commands. There is a huge gap between the lowest paying P5 TV deal and the highest paying G5 deal. If the AAC got more money than the PAC 12, they'd be considered P5. They don't.

The reason I say that is I remember when Syracuse, BC, Pitt all went to the ACC. The comment was they had to in order to get the revenue to "keep up". And it seemed strange because that was the same reason Maryland "left" the ACC. Money was better in the B1G.

So, looks like the B12 may survive. They will never produce another NC(not like they have done it much anyway the past few decades). Cinci, USF, BYU & Houston have put in their bids to join. Were I Bowlsby, I'd jump on this. Cinci is looking very good, Houston gives a S/E Texas presence, BYU opens up the door to Pacific talent(Samoans, Hawaiians as there are many Mormons there) and USF at least a foot in SEC country.

Gotta wipe them feet on the way out.
charlie murphy fuck yo couch GIF

True. Probably 3 or 4 teams in the SEC generate 50% of the revenue.

The SEC has 9 of the most profitable teams in the top 20 of college football. Once TX and OU join it will be 11.

The Big 10 has 4.
The PAC has 3.
ACC has 1

Yep. Miss State and South Carolina draw lots of eyeballs from Collville, WA and Intercourse, PA. (There really is such a place.)
South Carolina is 20th on the list.

I mean, does anyone honestly think that the new additions OR the remaining teams would run the table in the Big12 on a regular basis? Cause... I know I don't. And that's not even taking OOC games into account.

Be a fun/competitive conference to keep up with and watch certain games ect for sure , I'd be a fan but their champion is going to have to either run the table or finish with 1 loss overall to even be in the conversation for a playoff spot even if they expand. Throw in the best players getting paid more to go to the other conferences... Gonna be very very tough if not impossible imo.

Its probably their best move. And it removes any doubt that a G5 league might be on par with them

I think you just described a G5 conference.

Thats what its gonna be, the powers that be may call it something else but... its gonna be a G5
See @Red_Alert, I ain't the only one that thinks they'll turn into a G5!

But, he is an SEC guy so ALL other conferences are G5 level compared to the S-E-C!

I don't think we're talking about the same things.

I'm referring to media rights revenue, you're referring to overall revenue.

By that criteria the PAC and ACC minus Clemson aren't power conferences

I agree it'll be considered G5.

I'm being facetious in that let's stop this farce of calling the P5 conferences a "grind" for CFP teams.

Either Oklahoma was playing a P5 "grind" or they weren't. Apparently they haven't been.
