Applewhite turned out fair, not great. Chiles didn't work out at all did he?

And, Applewhite and Chiles didn't win any Super Bowl MVP awards.

While it is looking in the rear view mirror, all the Texas schools whiffed on those two.

Evidence suggests that several teams in Texas weren't too swift at evaluating and/or developing QB talent..and Mack may have been the leader. While A&M has Tannehill to carry the banner, they played him at WR for a while. And Texas only has McCoy carrying their banner. Both pale in comparison to the banner Mahomes is carrying for Tech.

Hell, the only school in Texas willing to let RGIII play QB was UofH. When Briles left there RGIII followed him. EVERY P5 school wanted RGIII to play safety! I still think he should have concentrated on being an Olympic hurdler. JMO.

That was pretty bad. Wouldn’t have sucked so much losing out on Watson had we got the consolation prize of Josh Dobbs, another Atlanta kid. That ultimately lead to Richt losing his job.

Yep, he was an Austin guy in UT's back yard as well. IIRC, he walked on at Tech so all the in state schools whiffed on him too....and some from out of state.

But, while Mayfield started at Tech, he and Murray are carrying the OU banner in the NFL. (Give A&M credit for at least landing Murray even though it didn't work out.)

Here is the best example example of Texas missing on QBs. (And not just the University of Texas. Every university in the state!)

Pretty sure there is only one high school that can claim TWO Super Bowl MVP as their alumni. Austin Westlake High School.

Drew Brees Westlake Class of '97 (Purdue) XLIV Super Bowl MVP
Nick Foles Westlake Class of '07 (Arizona) LII Super Bowl MVP

Both in UT's "back yard". And "just down the street" from A&M and Baylor. And only "a couple of blocks" from TCU.

Westlake HS to University of Texas 7-8 miles (depending on route)
Westlake HS to Texas A&M University 113 miles
Westlake HS to Baylor University 106 miles

I was gonna add Jevan Snead, but after researching, he did go to Texas before transferring to Ole Miss. Also saw he killed himself in 2019. Sad

Kliff is an elite QB evaluator.. Mahomes is the best QB in the NFL but his teams sucked in Lubbock. Again, this thing isn't an exact science..if it were Mahomes would have been the #1 recruit in the nation

...and he'd have been the #1 draft choice too if it were an exact science.

Missing some of them is one thing. Missing a bunch is another. And it just isn't Texas or A&M. Some of the others whiffed as well. And I can't decide if it was more poor evaluation, poor development or both.

I think if Coach GQ had stayed at A&M, Murray might have been okay. And while Mayfield and Kliff had an ugly divorce, I still think he helped develop Mayfield. Not to diminish what Riley did, but both had a part in Mayfield's development. (Along with his high school coach.)

Agree totally on Mahomes' teams in Lubbock. Other than some receivers, they weren't much.

That was probably the list I saw. That was my main question. A boat load of NFL talent and none went to Texas. So that was my question, not today’s recruiting but the question is why.

Carr and his family moved back to Bakersfield for his senior year, and he attended Bakersfield Christian High School. Carr's high school football career began at Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas.

Ahh, okay. Did not know that. Did they live in Sugarland while his brother was QB for the Texans?
