2022 Official Transfer Portal Thread

Is it Tennessee coaches, or Tennessee "businessmen"?

"Businessmen" of course.

But hasnt past logic been that if the university or people involved with the football team know shady practices are going on with "businessmen" and allow it to continue it's the old "lack of institutional control"?

A guy who wasn't in the portal and really had no reason to be suddenly is and already know where he wants to go. There's no way someone on the coaching staff doesn't know. I guess the problem is being able to prove that they knew and maybe participated in telling the "businessmen" what players to throw the cash at.

Bingo.

I thought the portal nonsense would calm down after a few years but it appears I was wrong on that, seems like it's only gonna get worse and more crazy.

The timing that the portal opens really screws some high school kids, they are the real losers here.

It really changes recruiting too, I bet we see a lot of shuffling right before signing day because of teams opting for portal players instead.

Scholarships should be enforceable contracts. No year-to-year scholarships, but with buyout wording for both sides.

I agree it is shady, but how are you going to stop something like a businessman saying "Every player/lineman/WR at this school will get $100k a year" and that story being sent to players not in the portal?

Ok, I have to know the "why". A lot of these teams have double digit wins, conference championships, good/great coaches, etc. Are these "starting players" that are leaving or many riding the pine that think they will start at their next destination? Are these players leaving A&M saying, "Man, we sucked this year, I am outta here. Jimbo doesn't have a clue"? I could see some VT players saying that, but it is only Pry's first year.

I am at a loss.

With the Alabama types it's likely players lower on the depth chart getting "suggested" they should take themselves elsewhere to make room for higher rated recruits they want to bring in.

Even if it's backups though. In A&Ms case losing over 20 players still hurts, you take a big whack in the depth department. I guess thats the age we live in though, anyone not in the 2 deep (and even then) is liable to move on after 1 or 2 years. Big time P5 schools no longer will develop players. They'll just snatch players from a lower school after they develop there.

Well, I was thinking something like that in "some" cases. At least I was on the right track. I consider myself having decent knowledge related to college football (only been watching and keeping up since 1999). But I swear the NIL ( a little bit) and the transfer portal blow my mind. Especially the number of players entering it, and this is just the beginning of the window.

A&M hasn't lost anyone really of consequence yet, just a lot of people blocked by the big class of last season.
Also, these are people who have entered or announced they are entering isn't it? Not people that actually left yet?

Entering doesn't mean you leave, necessarily. NIL has a lot to do with it as well as it is a frenzy for NIL money like the majors have free agency. And before the transfer portal some of these kids would just quit rather than sit behind a couple of 4-5 stars.

I think a lot of what we are seeing is guys who were 4 star recruits being unwilling to sit a couple years before they get meaningful playing time. A lot of these guys hitting the portal have only been at their schools a season or two.

Not that I blame them, why risk another year on the bench, or getting passed up by the next recruit coming in.

They days of player development for the upper level teams are over. It's either produce right away, or find somewhere else. If you don't produce they'll just pluck a transfer to replace you.

If you enter and don't leave, will that coach hold it against you? Just for entering. Just curious. If Urban was still coaching, I could very much see this happening.

Depends on the player and their value to the team. If you're the 3rd string kicker and want to walk back entering the portal...get lost. If you were the starting QB and there isn't someone behind you...welcome back, son!

I could be wrong but if you enter the portal your former school isn't obligated to take you back.

I think that is right. But on a case by case they may. I think there is also a difference between entering it and saying you are going to enter in on twitter.
