2022 Season Thread

This is pure torture.

12 to go, 4.4 sec. lead

STAY GREEN!

7 to go, 4 sec lead

Blaney into the wall, stays green

Oh my, knew there'd be a yellow there, no yellow. Suarez lost a tire.

3 to go, 3.9

I really thought they would throw a yellow there. Glad they didn’t.

WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Harvick in the playoffs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

God I love seeing Toyota be the class of the field all race only to throw it away.

Been a Kevin Harvick fan since day one, and I thought he was trending towards Jimmie Johnson at the end. Figured we'd seen his last career win. Glad to see him get back in victory lane. But do note that if Harvick goes on a run and somehow wins what NASCAR calls a championship, it won't be legit. 3rd and 4th place in points fighting for the last playoff spot, pretty much telling them their consistency was worthless, meanwhile Kurt Busch has now missed 3 races, pulled one win out of his ass and will have a chance to win a Mickey Mouse title.

The chase was dumb, the playoffs are dumber, and anyone who puts any stock into them are dumb too.

Great day for sports.

Harvick wins and gets into the playoffs.

Cards sweep Yankees and take a 2 game lead in the central.

And that was one of the luckier wins in Harvick's career. Final pit stop at exactly the right time, Bell clearing himself and bringing out the caution kept Harvick from losing a lap in the pit exchange, everyone else on the lead lap pits under the caution, handing the lead to Harvick, and then the restart got a slower Logano in second creating a big gap.

It'll make up for the one he should have had.

Cry Bubba cry, wtf. You actually think Logano was blocking for Harvick?

Poor guy, the whole world's against him.

Turned it over after the checkered because I didn’t want to listen to any post race shit. Glad I did.

Like Kyle after missing part of the season with Injury?
The Chase for the Chumpionship has always been a joke.

I will not note this, and you're silly for saying it.

If Harvick goes on a run and somehow wins another Championship, he will have done so by a set of rules that NASCAR drivers, owners, and competition directors all agreed to and frankly fought for. He will win by the same set of rules that every other driver and team has played under. Because YOU, a fan, doesn't have a loving affection for the current rulebook, doesn't make anything illegitimate and it's a tremendously immature way to look at things.

Yes though, let's PLEASE go back to the points system in the 80's when races were won by 10+ seconds, nothing was all that exciting, the Championship was clinched with several races left to go in the season, and everything was cookie cutter and frankly, BORING. The same 5 guys won week in and week out, and nobody else really stood a chance. Very exciting.

GTFO with this "not legit" horseshit. Kyle Busch missed half a season and won a championship. Kurt has missed a few races to make sure his brain isn't going to fall out of his ears. I think the dude has earned his spot in the playoff with a quality win.

The only thing mickey mouse here is your immature stance.

It’s a stupid gimmick, and anyone who recognizes it’s legitimacy loves stupid gimmicks. End of story.

I hated Jeff Gordon with a passion, but as far as I’m concerned, he’s a 7 time champ just like Richard and Dale.

The season long format is the only format that an auto racing league should have. If it’s possible for a driver to have 35 wins and a second place finish on the season and not be the champion, the system is stupid.

They can tweak the points system, and I don’t mind stages(just don’t see a need for a caution at the end of the stage, reward points and keep the line moving), but to pretty well say you can win the right races and have an average finish in the 20’s, or even miss a significant part of the season and win the championship, it’s stupid, and recognizing it is condoning it.

We were robbed of the best championship battle of all time in 2019 when Kyle Busch would have edged out Kevin Harvick by a single point.

I remember as a kid, I’d be happy when Dale Sr or Kevin Harvick would get a top 10 finish, or salvage something out of a rough day, now if you don’t have a chance to win, you might as well just go to the garage and try again next week.

The F1 points system is very flawed too since there’s no difference between finishing 11th and last, but it’s still a full season format same as every other major racing league in the world, and thus far superior to NASCAR’s.

Brian France was the worst thing to ever happen to NASCAR. I watch it for the racing, and I keep up with the full season standings, but the chase/playoffs are dumb and I pay them no mind.

We’ll never get to see a season like 1998 Jeff Gordon again. Domination might be boring to some, but it should also be appreciated. F1’s popularity was still on the rise when Lewis Hamilton was winning damn near every race and like a million titles in a row.

It's not a gimmick. It's an attempt to make the product on the track more exciting, interesting, and competitive. Because once upon a time, the team who could afford to hire 250 engineers, skirt the rule book, and put NASA-quality parts in every system of the car won the race and the championship. Usually by landslides. Races weren't so much won by the driver on the track on raceday...they were run by the shop on Tuesday. Dale Sr, Darrell, Rusty, or Richard driving to the checkers was a mere formality in many cases.

The current format absolutely rewards domination. Moreso than before. If a driver/team can rattle off numerous wins throughout the season, the bonus they get come playoff time is tremendously difficult for the competition to overcome. To add to the intrigue, you don't even have to win races to gain a playoff advantage, because winning stages earns you a bonus point as well. So the races within the races (stages) adds a very healthy amount of intrigue that makes some of these long races more interesting.

Also, we weren't robbed of shit. The best championship battle? How about a tie breaker between Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards in 2011? How about nowadays, a team/driver has to perform consistently throughout the ENTIRE season, up to and including the final race, to bring home a championship. NASCAR has a difficult task of having to compete for viewers with traditional stick and ball fans. What does your average fan want to see? A contest that goes down to the wire. A contest that requires every game (race) to be competed and fought for. A climactic ending where yes, indeed - a bad game, a bad night, a bad race does in fact spoil the season, no matter how good it was. The New England Patriots went undefeated, and went to the Superbowl in a season where everyone thought they had it locked. And no doubt, they were still the better team, even in that Superbowl. But they had to play the game, and they had to perform in order to take home the Lombardi, and Eli Manning and the Giants had something to say about that. And the sports world LOVED it. NASCAR won't please EVERYONE, but they need to please as many as they possibly can, and the way to do that is to make every lap of every race matter as much as possible. They have done a pretty outstanding job, given the difficulty of the difference between racing and stick/ball sports, in doing that.

In the 90's and early 2000's fans writ large complained about the boring nature of "points racing". Drivers going out there being happy with a 9th place finish. Wins weren't so much a big deal, just consistently be "above average" and you are ok points wise. It was incredibly boring on a week to week basis. I can't tell you how happy I am that those days are gone. They sucked. Welcome to another outrageously long 1.5 mile oval that we already know only one of maybe 3 drivers has a chance to win, and low and behold the winner will win by 12 seconds with a grand total of 8 cars on the lead lap. Whooooooo that was exciting! But some (trust me -- only SOME) ate it up because the winner was their beloved Wallace, Waltrip, or Earnhardt. Yawn. Garbage.

If you don't think the current format hasn't produced infinitely better racing, more intrigue, more drama, more "can't take a race off" type of product, then there is no way you're an actual racing fan. You're a "i want my driver to dominate and blast the competition" fan, but you aren't a racing fan. It's not possible. NASCAR racing over the past several years and gotten increasingly better. If they could just stop going overboard with road courses and infields, it'd be as close to perfect as you can hope for in this age. And yet there's still curmudgeons here like yourself who inexplicably beg for the days of the NASCAR nap to return. Pish motherfkn posh on that.

Interesting stat -

If you look at the 60 tightest margins of victory all-time in NASCAR, only 7...yes, that's right, 7 - were from pre-2000. That is staggering.
