Big East Basketball

KP rating by year for Ed Cooley's Providence program

2012 #126 (no NCAAT)
2013: #69 (no NCAAT)
2014: #48 (#11 seed; Round of 64)
2015: #27 (#6 seed; Round of 64)
2016: #44 (#9 seed; Round of 32)
2017: #60 (#11 seed; First Four)
2018: #63 (#10 seed; Round of 64)
2019: #79 (no NCAAT)
2020: #40 (COVID)
2021: #80 (no NCAAT)
2022: #32 (#4 seed; Sweet 16)
2023: #45 (#11 seed; Round of 64)

i would consider 2022 a great season for Providence. top 4 tournament seed and a good run in the NCAAs. 2015 was also solid. Got upset in the first round that year but that is how the tournament plays out sometimes. Outside of that it is a whole lot of meh. I consider Cooley to be an above average coach. tbh, his teams have a unique ability of being on the right side of the bubble. His resume looks a whole different if they had a tad worse luck in 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2023.

He will return to Georgetown back to respectability but if they were looking for a coach that was going to return them to the top tier of college basketball then they struck out.

You gotta remember the expectations of the program tho. PC aint Kentucky or even Gtown.

They made the tournament under Cooley as many times as they had in the years before him since Pitino was coach.

that excuse doesn't cut the mustard, b/c nobody is asking for a FF appearance, just more than one top 30 team in twelve seasons.

I'm not exactly sure Georgetown can get back to the top tier regardless. Maybe Pitino in a short run with some good transfers, but outside of that, Cooley is probably the best they can hope for. They were dangerously close to becoming a dead program. Like you said, he'll get them back to respectability, but their top tier days are over.

He's never been a great HS recruiter, maybe that's because he was at Providence, or maybe he's just not that good at it. But I do find it interesting that he's had his best two year stretch in this portal era. I don't think that's a coincidence, which I think will help him bring Gtown back to respectability. Will he get them back to what they were in the 80's and 90's? I have my doubts about that. Also, it won't help that the Big East will be insane moving forward. DePaul is really the only shitty program in the league now. Assuming Butler, Gtown and St. Johns all make leaps with their coaches.

Something should still happen but looking like Shaka will keep everyone of note aside from Omax.

Slightly surprised that he is the only one to even declare, based off TK comments throughout the year as roomie/BF of Oso I was always confident Oso would be back but thought he would test. Maybe even Tyler too.

I do believe Omax is gone, not sure its his best call but maybe he gets some assurances. His offense will be easily replaced with MOre Joplin and Gold. Big loss on D with his length. Guys will have to step up.

Barring something major shifting no transfers of note but also wont replace Omax with a transfer either im hearing.

They survived the portal and that was the big thing.

It looks like those guys are in it for another run.

Omax officially got the NBA combine invite, he gone.

Still a good off season but until proven that guys can replace his impact(mostly on D) this is more of a top 10-15 team on paper to start the year. With potential to have little to no drop off with proper improvements like we got from guys stepping in last year.

Its just a edited together clip, but man if Oso hits some 3s, lets fucking go.

Funny thing about this clip is some people are freaking out about the low form.

Oso can shoot 3s underhanded if thats his best chance of going in. It dont matter. He will never take a guarded 3 so a low release point is completely irrelevant. He just needs to be able to take(and make some) a 3.

Elite NBA aleticism, passing and dribbling for a big. Not a single team in america will close out on him intentionally.

Omax officially gone. Been known for a while.

95% sure Shaka is keeping the roster as is….a potential end of rotation back up doesn’t count.

But boy id love if he shocked me and made a run at Burton from Richmond.

His MO so far has been long term loyalty so I think it’s Jop and Gold time

Big loss for next season, but Marquette will still be a top 10 team. Big East is gonna be crazy next season. I can see 7 teams making the tournament if things fall into place.

Big loss on D currently. Ross is a good defender but hes a guard so he wont be able to takee on 4s for more than stints.

Offensively no concerns. More Joplin and Gold is at worse a wash and probably improvement. But Omax was a true lock down defender so thats the blow.

BE will be very interesting. Especially curious to see how St Johns does out of the get. Rick assembled a quaility roster on the fly as expected, but its also a very flawed one imo too.

Rumor going around that UConn wants out of the BE

Rumor going around that UConn wants out of the BE
Old news.

Football money drawing a team out of the BE.

If they get an offer to join, they are surely gone. That's an if though. Their football program is horrendous so I don't know why the Big 12 would offer. Building a mega basketball conference seems useless...

Creighton gets Kalkbreener and Alexander to both return. Nova picks up Burton.

Fuck this league is gonna be bonkers.

Nova will be the most interesting case. Great portal additions but still a very question mark team due to Neptune and Moores health. Their starting 5 doesnt have a true PG. But if Moore is healthy enough he can handle the bulk of the ball handling forsure.

Pitino nabs Simeon Wilcher from Carolina.

Pitino is really making quick work.

Football regular season is still a month away so College Bball is even further. That said foreign trips are happening. So fun seeing some tidbits. Unfortunately Shaka is going the no full game tape route.

But Marquette did have a public practice plus people close to the program with scoop on all things summer and the foreign games there is some info. First off, the teams they are dismantling in Italy suck so clear that up quick.

TK/Oso/Kam look as youd expect. The big 3. First two clearly being the captains and will run the show yet again.

Biggest thing is after that. All reports are Chase Ross looks like he may be a real problem. He showed extreme flashes last year. And with more oppportunity hes a freak who could take off. He wowed at the practice and reports are his jumper looks much better. Shaka is raving about him as well. And past indicates that Shaka is usually right when he singles out a guy for that.

Jop is still a bucket. Slimmed down. Working hard defensively. Key to this team will be if Joplin/Ross/Gold can play enough D to off set the Omax loss on that end. Offesnively.....zero concern.

Gold is out with shin splints. Its said to not be a major concern. But Shaka did give a schollie to Hamilton to come a year early just in case. If Gold ends up not healthy thats a big loss. He is the Oso/Joplin back up option at the 4 and 5. Ross will play there undersized a bit but we need a big with Golds range.

Last tidbit. Of the freshman all seem to have promise. Lowry appears to be Ross 2.0. Already looking like a player with the hope by year 2 can take off. That seems to be the Shaka MO. Lengthy atheltic guards that can develop quickly within the first 2 years.

Piggy back off this.

Team just had the open to the public scrimmage and its all lining up with what has been said.

Obviously its a damn scrimmage so results dont matter but the "defensive" team beat the offense team. We had Kolek, Oso, Kam and Jop all on the same team and it lost.

The Ross hype is through the roof right now as a CBB breakout player. Rothstein also reported on it and as goofy as he is, he doesnt say things if there isnt credible intel. Lowry like I said above continues to look like Ross 2.0 as the freshman.

Biggest issue for this team will be the fact that as deep as they are, at end of the day assuming health you really only use 7-8 guys anyways and we still dont have a true big man that will play. No matter the mismatches that Oso and even Gold can create. There is no bruiser.

But overall this team is 100% going to be the best team weve had since the 70s. Record will be worse than last year almost certainly but that is due to waaaaay tougher schedule both non con and in the conference.

I think Marquette should have gone after at least one transfer, but they should be OK.

Gavitt Games matchups as usual are not great.

Not sure if it makes sense to keep scheduling these games.

It's more work for the monster conferences to schedule thier OOC.
