Big Ten Basketball

I definitely think Iowa is vulnerable without him in the lineup. And by vulnerable, meaning Iowa could lose in the R32. With him, I think Iowa is definitely an E8 team. I think there's a lot to be said for someone who knows his role and plays it very well. He's the perfect 3 and D player. All the pieces just don't fit without him.
The thing with CJ is he always makes the right play . Dude has a 10 to 1 assist to turnover ratio lol. Garza, Weiskamp and JBo all get 1-2 extra steps of being open with him out there and ge never misses them when they are

He's smart, and is perfect in his role. Don't get me wrong I really like Murray and his potential, but his fit with the starters just isn't the same.

This Iowa team really only works when all the pieces are present. Wingsauce said he doesn't buy 1 guy making this team work and he's right because it's not 1 guy. Its 4 guys. CJ, JBo, Weiskamp and Garza are all equally important because they fit perfectly together in what they do. Replacing any of them is like taking a piece out of an engine and then expecting it to work properly. Hopefully they all stat healthy . If they do I'm with you. I still think this is an E8 caliber team or better

And still won by double digits.

Is it possible to forfeit the remainder of the season? Just curious.
Itll get better soon . 2 years and you guys will be solid

Lol, missing one guy-a guy in only his second year nonetheless, on a deep, veteran team and falling apart without him isn't the sign of a team that is fit to make a deep run at all.

If anything it shows how mentally weak the team is. The analogy about missing an engine part is laughable. We weren't missing a part without CJ. We weren't playing 5 on 4. We simply had to sub someone else for CJ.

Now if we were missing our perspective POY, I could totally agree. I'm not going to listen to excuses about why we couldn't beat Indiana twice and why we couldn't close out OSU at home. Best win is Rutgers on the road.

If Iowa is gonna win 4 games in the tourney they better get a lot better on D. Can’t be one sided and go anywhere.

How many NCAA tourney wins do they have in the last 5-6 years? One?

my guess is if they win 3 games in the tourney they will be lucky.

I’ll give you the first part no doubt but these kids are grinding like college kids never have. No fans and they barely see their family if it all. So I expect a week or 2 drop in performance mentally during the season.
Now you get a team with a chip on their shoulder that plays great D and wants to take it all out on their opponents... that could be different but they’re still kids so lapses are gonna happen. Offense yeah it could suffer from lack of mental focus especially shooters going cold

Maybe ? Best answer I can give you . The reality is we aren't ever going to be good on D. We are mediocre and can occasionally be good in stretches . That said this is a top 2 offesne in CBB with a ton of experience so its silly to dismiss their chances against basically anyone not named Gonzaga or Baylor . Iowa just played 2 extremely competitive games vs top 6 teams without their best shooter and defender . With Fredrick they definitely beat IU both times and likely won at least 1 of the 2 vs OSU and Illinois ( if not both)

That said when you're an offense first team anything is possible in a 1 game scenario

And I don’t know what to think of Illinois. If Ayo gets hungry and our D wants to get nasty then we could go far especially if we don’t forget about Kofi in the middle. If Ayo is thinking NBA in the back of his head and not focused, this team will not be focused and we will probably win 1 game if we are lucky. Illinois has zero experience in the tourney, but they have been a very good road team going back to last year.

Not even out of FEB yet so a lot of time left

That’s not good. And what’s Iowa’s road record been like with Garza?

Anything could happen, but every team is going to go cold at some point. Just have to get some stops and go to Garza for big buckets

Honestly I'm more concerned about avoiding lulls in our scoring. Every game we've lost this year has featured a 5-7 minute stretch where we don't score at a good clip . I get what you're saying and generically you're right nut every team is composed differently. This Iowa team isn't going to win a 65-63 game nearly ever . So they need to do what they do best and be great at it .

Oh yeah and when an opposing team is solid defensively that could turn into 10 minutes with the perfect storm.

I love Murray but he's no CJ. Not on offense, not on defense , not intellectually.

I get it. You're an Iowa fan so you are set up for disappointment always and as soon as stuff goes a little awry you're jumping ship. My best buddy is just like you lol. All I'll tell you is the sane thing I told him. If we are healthy in March it'll all be fine. This team is an immensely hard prep on a short turnaround for teams not familiar with us. You'll see. I know you won't believe me now but all we can do is wait and see

Like I said before, they do something special in March/April, I'll eat my words.

Bottom line, while I hated the Lickliter schemes and was thrilled to change to Fran's game, it's lost its luster. I like controlled hustle and some defense.

Fwiw, I haven't jumped ship. I don't miss a game if I can help it. I try seeing things realistically and I don't buy all the hype. This is typical Franball.

Well one of us will get to brag lol. I know we both hope it's me

I think you're being really low on what Frederick brings to the table. The fit and chemistry is alot better with him on the court. Iowa was housing teams with him in the lineup. You beat Minnesota by 15, Purdue by 15, NW by 15 and 23. MD by 22 @MD. Swept Rutgers beating them by 13 this time around. I think when he went down with the injury Iowa was up to #3 in KenPom.

I honestly don't think Iowa is all that deep of a team. I only really trust 7 guys, sometimes 8 depending on how the other McCaffrey is playing. You take away a player avg 26.5 mpg prior to the injury, and have to put in his place a starter that doesn't fit the same, it weakens your starting 5, but also your bench.

I'd go 8 for sure with Murray, Nunge and Toussaint. P McCaffrey has had his moments too. But really thats my big question this year. Why are we using Perkins and Uhlis so much at the expense of Toussaint? It's like ever since he missed those fts at Minnesota his minutes go down every game. Obviously I'm not at practice but there's no way Joe T is not a better offensive option than those guys and he led us in steals last year. Its really weird to see Perkins in there instead of him. I dont get it
